LYNN — In 1840, a few local neighborhood boys decided to place goldfish into a shallow swamp, not realizing how much they would flourish. A few decades later, in 1870, the city took on the project of transforming the swamp into what is now known as Goldfish Pond, according to their website.
After almost 110 years of neglect that began to destroy the nature of the pond and its attached park, the Goldfish Pond Association was founded. Kathy Montejunas, one of the founders of the association founded in 1980, and the rest of the members have continuously donated their time to keeping Goldfish Pond in a beautiful state.
The biggest factor in raising money for flowers and equipment to keep up with the area is the Annual Fun N’ Flea Day, which has been hosted by the association since it began 37 years ago.
“We call it “Fun N’ Flea Day” because we try to include enough things that make it fun for families to come rather than just a traditional flea market,” said Montejunas. “We have bouncy houses, face painting, and two boats that bring the kids around the pond.”
Along with fun activities for families to enjoy, the non-traditional flea market is offering raffles with prizes adding up to almost $2,000 in gift certificates to various local restaurants, hair salons, and small markets. Food will also be offered, including pizza brought in from Shoreline Pizza, a variety of sandwiches, and a table full of baked goods.
For those who want to sell their products at the Annual Fun N’ Flea Day it is a $35 buy-in if purchased ahead of the event, which will be this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. With rain as a possible disruption, the delay date will be the following Saturday, Sept. 16.
To purchase a buy-in beforehand, or for any questions, please contact Kathy Montejunas 781-592-3837 or John Baker 781-599-1629.
