MALDEN — If you live in Malden or Medford, Labor Day means a lot more than just a day off or flipping some burgers on the grill.
For hundreds of residents locally and many more around the region, Labor Day means the Annual Irish American Road Race.
The 33rd running is on Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 4. More than 300 runners all told are expected to compete in either the 5K or 10K races with seven age categories with men and women competing for honors in both.
Registration for the race at the site begins at 9 a.m. and the races begin at 11 a.m. Runners may register online at coolrunning.com.
For more than three decades the race has retained its hometown feel despite its growth to become one of the marquee running events of the greater Boston area. It is not uncommon to see whole families competing in this event, as well as representatives of multiple generations of the same families, all running on the same day.
