Overturned boat prompts search

A Nahant firefighter uses binoculars to scan the water off of Nahant beach as a coast guard boat and State Police helicopter search for an overturned boat.

A call to Lynn Police at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday about a boat overturned in the water off Red Rock on Lynn Shore Drive prompted a call to the Coast Guard and a helicopter and boat search.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicole Groll said the caller reported two people in need of assistance. The subsequent Coast Guard and Lynn Fire Department search located the boat washed up on Kings Beach and located the owner. Authorities determined the owner used the boat earlier in the day and the boat drifted away from where the owner tied it up before overturning.

The initial report of people in the water proved to be unfounded.
