NAHANT — The library’s annual book sale began Sunday and will continue throughout the week with thousands of books available for less than a dollar.
Books, which were donated to the library for the sale, start at 50 cents for paperbacks and range up to $3 for novels. DVDs are also available. All sales will benefit the Friends of the Library, who support the Nahant Library’s many programs for children and adults.
Library director Sharon Hawkes said this year’s collection includes a large number of cookbooks, and a collection of island photography by James Shea, a Nahant resident.
Ocean-themed photographs by local artist James Shea are being sold for $20 each, framed and matted. Shea died earlier this year and the photos were donated by his family.
As a tradition, many people choose to purchase a year’s worth of reading materials and donate the books back for others to read the following year, said Hawkes.
To kick off the event on Sunday, the Apollo Club of Boston, the second-oldest men’s song group in the country, performed a concert and closed the event with the “Nahant Hymn,” written by John Dineen and Robert Risch in 1990.
The sale will continue Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 12-4 p.m.
