MEDFORD — Local residents get a chance next Thursday to review seven street improvement plans announced by Mayor Stephanie M. Burke this week.
The March 2 public information session is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Brooks Elementary School, 388 High St.
“These road improvements will increase the safety of vehicular transportation, cyclists, walkers and automobiles,” said Department of Public Works Commissioner Brian Kerins. “The city of Medford and our Department of Public Works will continue to work diligently to create safer and cleaner roadways throughout our community and by utilizing this funding we will see that these projects reach their completion.”

Traffic flow and pedestrian safety improvements are planned for the intersection of Main Street and Medford Street near Tufts Pool and Park. Bicycle traffic improvements are planned for Boston Avenue from High Street to Broadway.
In Medford Square (Salem Street at Ashland Street) pedestrian safety improvements are planned and pedestrian and vehicle safety improvements are planned for Haines Square.
Traffic and pedestrian safety improvements are planned in Winthrop Circle and school crossing safety improvements at the existing crosswalk at the Brooks School. West Medford Square is also scheduled for pedestrian safety improvements at High Street at Warren.
The improvements will be discussed in detail at the March 2 meeting except for the Haines Square work, which will be the subject of future meetings.
Burke’s office, in a statement, said all projects but Haines Square have been approved for funding via the Complete Streets Funding Program. The city plans to pay for Haines Square improvements with state Chapter 90 money, the mayor’s office said, via MassDOT’s Chapter 90 program.
A consultant team worked with city officials beginning last November to visit streets and squares and devise improvement designs.
