SAUGUS — Kane’s Donuts placed a bet with a Pennsylvania donut shop on Sunday’s AFC Championship game between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Mac’s Donut Shop, Inc., a long-time family-owned gourmet donut store in Aliquippa, Penn., has agreed to put a dozen of their donuts on the line in the spirit of a little competition.
Depending on the results of the game, the losing bakery will be subjected to the humiliation of making donuts while wearing the winning team’s jersey and will send a dozen of their sweet treats to the victorious shop.

The competing shops posted photos and videos on their social media accounts, challenging each other and participating in friendly trash-talking.
Kane’s first challenged Hugs & Donuts, a shop in Houston, Texas, for the AFC Divisional matchup between the Patriots and Houston Texans last Saturday.
“Wagers are a longstanding tradition between different politicians and we decided ‘why not give it a shot with the donuts,’” said Paul Delios, president of Kane’s. “Artisan donuts today are so competitive. We tried to find an old family artisan donut shop. We feel that there is no other donut shop like Kane’s Donuts but we definitely respect them.
“If we are going to eat their donuts — because the Patriots are going to win — we want to enjoy what we are eating,” he said.
Kane’s opened the original family-owned store on Lincoln Avenue in Saugus in 1955. A second location was launched at International Place in downtown Boston last year. A third store, a 3,500-square-foot cafe, is planned for Saugus’ Essex Landing, the $120 million development under construction at the former Route 1 Miniature Golf & Batting Cages.
“Kane’s approached us,” said Twila McKittrick, who runs Mac’s Donut shop with her son, J.W. McKittrick. “We’re not sure how they heard about us. We are also family owned and have been in business for 59 years. We just think it’s wonderful. It’s so much fun. Our Facebook fans are having a blast with it.”
Maria Delios, who owns Kane’s with her siblings, said she upped the bet this time around, adding that they would also send six of their Patriots’ themed yeast donuts with vanilla frosting, should Kane’s lose the wager.
“We sell out of (the Patriots donuts),” Maria said. “We decorate it very festively to replicate the Patriots colors and, of course, we write ‘Go Pats’ on them. We’re making them nonstop. This is New England and the donut is delicious.”
Paul added that “when the Patriots win” he would like to send a dozen to Roger Goodell, commissioner of the National Football League.
As of Thursday, Kane’s was waiting for a taste of Hugs & Donuts’ best pastries to arrive in the mail.
