2 charged in suspected prescription pill deal

LYNN — Police arrested two men Wednesday morning at the Lynn Commons after witnessing an alleged drug deal involving prescription pills.

Craig Ernst and Corey O’Leary both from Lynn, were standing at benches at the gazebo, when an officer noticed the interaction around 11:30 a.m., Lynn Police Lt. Rick Donnelly said.

Donnelly said the meeting drew the officer’s attention because there have been recent fights and incidents with drugs in that location.

The officer saw O’Leary, 35, hand Ernst, 46, what appeared to be money, while clutching something in his other hand, and believed he witnessed a drug transaction. The officer called for backup, and when he approached O’Leary, the suspect put both hands in his pockets, Donnelly said.

Donnelly said O’Leary refused to take his hands out of his pockets when asked by police. The officer grabbed the suspect’s hand out of his pocket and recovered three green oval pills, which appeared to be prescription medication. O’Leary did not have a prescription for the pills, police said.

Ernst had money in his hands and during a patdown, the officer felt a prescription bottle in his jacket pocket. Ernst handed police the bottle, which turned out to be Clonazepam, a sedative that treats anxiety, panic disorders and seizures. He had a prescription for the pills, which were the same ones retrieved from O’Leary’s hand, Donnelly said.

Ernst was arrested and charged with Class C drug distribution. O’Leary was arrested and charged with Class C drug possession.

“It seems like a low level street drug deal that happened in the Commons,” Donnelly said.
