Brian Mahoney, a 65-year-old lobsterman who has been trapping lobsters since the 1960s, thought he spotted a shark in Lynn Harbor on Wednesday. But as he approached in his 30-foot boat, the Lynnfield resident realized it was a deer on the move.

“This young buck was swimming faster than a human being and he was halfway between the Belden Bly Bridge on the Lynn-Saugus line and the Bass Point Apartments in Nahant, about a two-mile swim,” he said. “I thought he was distressed so I watched him until he made land in Nahant.”
