SAUGUS – Pioneer Charter School of Science II in Saugus is expanding to accommodate an increase of 60 students.The project consists of four new modular classrooms and the beginning stages of adding a gym to the campus. All construction is on schedule, and it is expected to be completed by Aug. 15, just in time to start the school year.This will be the second year that PCSS II has been at its location on Main Street. For the 2013-2014 school year, the school resided in the old Everett High School while initial construction was being completed in Saugus.In its first year, PCSS served grades 7 through 9 and has grown each year since. The school will house close to 290 students this year, and when it reaches full capacity in 2016, there will be 360 students in grades 7 through 12. The school accepts students from all over Massachusetts with preference given to those from Saugus, Lynn, Peabody, Danvers and Salem.Pioneer Charter School of Science II is a tuition-free, public charter school. The school has an extended, 200-day school year and longer hours during the week. It also offers free tutoring programs after school and on Saturday mornings. PCSS II was established after the success of the flagship school, Pioneer Charter School of Science I in Everett.
