BOSTON – What began as a simple gesture in support of former St. John’s Prep and Boston College baseball star Peter Frates took on a life of its own last year when the Ice Bucket challenge went viral. This year, it’s coming back. In fact, the act of being doused with ice-cold water in support of finding a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis will now be an every-August thing.Monday, Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito will kick off the “Every August Until A Cure” Ice Bucket Challenge at the State House. Frates and his family will join them, as well state Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, state Auditor Suzanne Bump, and members of the Legislature.”Last summer, Pete Frates inspired millions of people around the country and the world – including Lauren and I – to participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and critical ALS research funding,” Baker said. “It is our pleasure to host Pete and his family at the State House on Monday as we continue to fight for a cure.”The Ice Bucket Challenge was contagious last summer and has successfully turned into a worldwide campaign to ?strike out ALS,'” said Polito. “I look forward to participating in my second challenge and helping the Frates family in their efforts.”Wednesday, it’ll be Eastern Bank’s turn to participate in the challenge at its Lynn headquarters, and Frates will be there too.Frates, 30, from Beverly, was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. Since then, he has lost most motor functions and the ability to speak. After he was diagnosed, he immediately began advocacy and fundraising for the disease. He and his friend, Pat Quinn, diagnosed in 2013, have been credited as creators of the Ice Bucket Challenge.”Our family wants to thank Gov. Baker, Lt. Gov. Polito and all participants for publicly taking part in this year’s ?Every August Until A Care’ Ice Bucket Challenge,” said Frates’ father, John. “We were overwhelmed with the support we received last summer, and will continue fighting to increase awareness and find a cure for ALS.”
