LYNN ? If this was a trap game, then the Marblehead High football team sidestepped it adroitly.Brooks Tyrrell ran for 270 yards and three touchdowns and Spencer Craig added two more rushing touchdowns as the Magicians breezed past Lynn English, 34-7, Friday night, at Manning Field.Marblehead (7-0) clinched the Northeastern Conference Large division title and the best record (though likely not the top seed) in the Div. 3 Northeast playoff bracket.”We didn’t want to look past this game,” Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff said. “English can be a very dangerous team. (Quarterback) Lucas Harris is a freak who can make big plays.”The Magicians mostly contained Harris using different looks, at times blitzing him and at times covering all his receivers. Harris threw just one touchdown pass, a 46-yarder to C.J. Hernandez in the third quarter, after Marblehead had scored all its points.”Sometimes, you just run into a better team,” English coach Peter Holey said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids who are learning. We’re playing five freshmen and three sophomores. They’re taking their lumps now, but hopefully in a couple of years they’ll be the ones giving them out.”English (1-6) moved the ball well on its first drive, but Marblehead’s Will Millett picked off a pass at his own 11-yard line and returned it to the 33. It took the Magicians 10 plays to score, with Craig scrambling in from the 16 for the first touchdown of the game with 4:58 left in the first quarter.Marblehead scored on its next three drives as well. Tyrrell carried the ball seven times, including an 11-yard scoring burst, and then Craig added another 11-yard touchdown run to make the score 20-0 with 6:08 remaining in the first half. After English failed to convert on 4th-and-2 from its own 37, Craig hit Liam Coughlin with a 32-yard pass and Tyrrell ran in from the 1-yard line two plays later to give the Magicians a 27-0 lead they took into halftime.Marblehead scored again on its first drive of the second half, and 87-yard march that included two passes from Craig to Brett Bial for 25 and 18 yards. The latter set up a 16-yard scoring run for Tyrrell.English answered with its only touchdown. After a 13-yard throw from Harris to Miguel Martinez, Harris hit Hernandez in the left flat. Hernandez broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and rumbled down the left sideline for a score that with the extra point made the count 34-7 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.Harry Craig recovered a fumble for Marblehead at English’s 35 with 7:06 left in the game, but the clock ran out on the Magicians with the ball at the Bulldogs 5-yard line.
