They remain some of the toughest courses in Lynn, and tonight, you will have a chance to run the Lynn Woods Summer Cross Country Races one last time this season (start time 6 p.m. at the Great Woods Road entrance).?It?ll probably be the usual short race, the Goat Path, 2.2 or 2.3 miles,” race director Bill Mullen said, “and something very simple for the long race, four miles at most, maybe even less. Sunset tomorrow is at 6:37 or 6:38. We?re really struggling to get people back home before it gets really dark.”Mullen reflected on the running season, the 45th at Lynn Woods, and some highlights, including the 10-Mile Relay on Aug. 20.?At the height, we?d regularly get over 300 runners (a week),” he said. “The relay did not have a record number, (but there were) 100 teams with 400 (people) coming.?The numbers were down as the season has waned after the relay, but they?re still in the 120 to 140 range. That would have been an overwhelming number 10 to 15 years ago.?We had big numbers at the core of the season, then a lessening because of school and the difficulties of (the midsummer change to a) 6 p.m. start. We?ve still had well over 100 (including) lots of new people who learned about the woods.”Ah, the woods … and the trails. The Goat Path, for instance. Earlier this year, Mullen mentioned the water bars, the strategically placed logs that not only help the environment, but also make you step a little higher. It gave me something else to notice on the uphill battle. Then there?s the Undercliff Trail, on which you test your balance on log bridges and slippery stone paths.I have enjoyed tackling these trails with fellow runners, including Kim and Kathy Mathews and Liam Brady. I also enjoyed the relay with, in our second straight year as teammates, Chris Stevens, Chris Cuddy and Dottie Thibodeau on “Never Surrender.”It has also been good to see the volunteers whom Mullen mentioned, including race founder Joe Abelon, Al Peterson and the Wilson family (Doug, Pam and Doug).Noting that the volunteers “get there early or stay late,” Mullen said, “It?s encouraging to see, to make sure other people are invested in the event so it keeps going.”I will not be there tonight – Rosh Hashanah starts this evening – but I hope everyone running has a good race!
