While the Tech boys soccer team returns its goalie and three defenders from last year?s state tournament team, coach Fred Gallo identified this season as a rebuilding one for the Tigers.Tech finished around .500 last year and reached the postseason, where it lost to Rockport in the first round.Goalie Tyler Beliveau, a senior, is back. He missed the last quarter of the season in 2013 with a broken wrist. However, Gallo said, “he?s playing fantastic. It didn?t slow him down at all.”Gallo said that his goalie is “tall, very athletic, very good head for the game … He had some good experience and is playing very well.”While Beliveau was out last year, three defenders came up big: Eric Imul, Carlos Perez and Hector Valdivieso. They are all back this year. Imul and Perez are seniors and Valdivieso is a junior.?They did a great job with the goalie out the last quarter of the season,” Gallo said. “Even with that, they were able to keep some games close. They?re a solid team. They work well together.”As for the team communication in general, the coach said, “The communication is key. We?ve got new kids. It?s tough to get them used to it.” Yet he added, “From the first practice to now, I?ve seen a lot of improvement. It?s coming along.”The season begins next Wednesday with a game against English in the Lynn City Tournament at Manning Field (5). The Tech athletic fields are being refurbished, but Gallo said, “we?ve been practicing on Manning. Thankfully, they?ve given us a daily slot.”This marks Gallo?s 14th year as Tech head coach. He is a guidance counselor at the school.
