LYNN – The 19-year-old victim in a fatal rollover accident on Route 128 during Hurricane Sandy Monday had immigrated to Lynn from Guatemala only three months agoIsaias Moises Lopez Solis was returning to the city with friends when the car in which he was riding hit a flooded area of the highway, according to the Consulate General of Guatemala.State Police said Tuesday that Solis, 19, was killed when the SUV in which he was a passenger struck the right guard rail of Route 128 South, just north of Lowell Street in Peabody, and rolled over at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday.Police said Lopez Solis and two other passengers were ejected from the car.Lopez Solis was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to State Police.Frederico Lopez, 18, of Lynn, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.Antonio Ramirez, 31, also of Lynn, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.The driver, Rony Lopez, 26, was not ejected from the car, according to police. He was taken to Salem Hospital, where a spokesperson said he was treated and released Monday.The Consulate General said Wednesday in a phone conversation and follow-up e-mail that Lopez Solis had immigrated to Lynn from Ixchiguan San Marcos, Guatemala three months ago.Asked if Lopez Solis had any family in the area, the Consulate General said in an email that they knew of “some people who know him in Massachusetts.”The office also said Lopez Solis and his friends were returning to Lynn after taking a friend back to his home Monday night. The office said they did not know what Lopez Solis was doing for work in the area and they are investigating his immigration status.The Consulate General attributed the cause of the accident to Hurricane Sandy, saying in a press release that the car in which Lopez Solis was traveling lost control after hitting a flooded portion of the highway.State Police Troopers said Monday they are investigating whether speed and weather may have played a factor in the crash, but the facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.The consulate said it and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala will contribute financially to help pay to bring the body back to Guatemala.Cyrus Moulton can be reached at [email protected].
