LYNN – In a week’s time Lynn Woods will be filled with beggars and blighters and ne’er-do-well cads telling the stories of the infamous pirate Capt. Thomas Veale, who once walked the trail to Dungeon Rock. There’s some swashbuckling fun in store on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the 10th annual Dungeon Rock Pirate Day in Lynn Woods Reservation.”It’s fun for the little ones, ages 4-to-10,” said Lynn Woods Ranger Dan Small. “It’s not scary. It’s really just a way to get people into the woods at the perfect time of year.”Starting at the Penny Brook Road entrance, volunteers dressed in pirate garb will lead hikes to Dungeon Rock about a half-mile into the woods, where Veale was said to have romped in the 1600s. Along the way there will be eight different pirate scenes played out for visitors.”Then they can go on to Dungeon Rock at the end if they want,” Small said. The whole event takes about 90 minutes and the walk is a mile total, he said.”From our end we’re getting people into the woods at the best time of year, which is really what we want and for the public it’s (inexpensive) entertainment that’s not frightening. The pirates don’t even have weapons and there’s no blood.”Small said there will be a concession stand, “Hog’s Breath Inn,” offering “Pirate Grub” and a gift shop to purchase booty and all proceeds go to fund the event.Participants should wear sturdy shoes for walking, carpool if possible, remember their “proper pirate manners” and above all, make reservations.”We lead groups of about 40 on a guided tour and they leave about every 10 minutes,” he said. “It makes it crazy if everyone shows up at once.”Call 781-477-7096 to make reservations or email [email protected] for more information.Small said he is hopes for a good turnout.”We had about 1,200 last year when it was horribly hot and we had 1,500 the year before,” he said. “We hope to have a good turn out ? We need the weather to work itself out.”Chris Stevens can be reached at [email protected].
