SAUGUS – Saugus and State police are actively investigating the death of a 2-year-old toddler that occurred in Cliftondale Square Sunday, Saugus Assistant Chief Leonard Campanello said.Saugus Police received several 911 calls around 2:01 p.m. of an accident “involving a child and possibly involving a motor vehicle,” Campanello said.Police and medical crews responded to Lincoln Avenue at Cliftondale Square, in front of the Family United Methodist Church, a Brazilian ministry.?They were there almost immediately, and it was apparent there were severe injuries to the child,” he said.The child, whom police did not identify, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:53 p.m., Campanello said. He said he could not confirm whether or not the toddler had been struck by a car.By 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, police had roped off three vehicles parked along the curb in front of the church and a neighboring Saugus Bank. A police cruiser blocked off a portion of Lincoln Avenue heading into the square shortly before 5 p.m.Campanello said more information would be available following the end of the investigation, which he said could be several days.
