BOSTON – Jed Lowrie, on the disabled list since June 17 with a left shoulder strain, has completed his rehab and expects to be activated Monday. Lowrie appeared in five games for Triple-A Pawtucket, batting .412 (7-for-17) with four doubles and five RBI, serving as the designated hitter and playing shortstop.”He’s fine,” manager Terry Francona said before the Red Sox series finale against the Yankees at Fenway Park Sunday night. “He swung the bat real well last night and came back tonight and will have a work day. He’ll go with us to Minnesota.”I don’t know if anyone’s a hundred percent. He’s fine. He’s not ready to play every day but he doesn’t have to. He really swung the bat pretty well. Sometimes when guys are out for a while you just don’t know how good they’re going to swing the bat. Carl came back and the first two days he got a bunch of hits and then he didn’t. But Jed has proven when he’s healthy he’s a really good hitter and when he’s not that’s when he makes outs. So I think it was good that we kind of took a slower route and got him healthy because he can really help us.”Lowrie, who said he was happy with how his rehab went, made his season debut on July 21 last year, missing the season up to that point because of mononucleosis. He also missed much of the 2009 season because of a wrist injury. While the reasons for his absences have been very different, he said, the experience should help him this year.”I think I’ve proven that time and again that I can get back up after being knocked down,” he said. “I think having that experience helps.”I feel good. I’m here to do whatever I can to help this team go where it needs to go.”His return to the roster should also help shortstop Marco Scutaro, who had three hits in his first three plate appearances last night.”I think it’ll do [Scutaro] some good [to rest],” Francona said. “He doesn’t like to hear that because he likes to play every day but I think it’ll be good for him when he’s not. Having Jed back we can kind of split it up, again, because Jed’s not ready to be out there every day. We can look at day game/night game matchups and kind of get them both ? Hopefully we’ll get the most out of both of them.”Josh Beckett has allowed just three earned runs in 27 innings pitched against the Yankees this season, for a 1.00 ERA.
