LYNN – A spike in violent crime including two carjackings, two shootings and a report of gunshots fired off in a park has city officials on edge. While extreme heat may have something to do with tempers reaching a boiling point, Lynn Police Captain Mark O’Toole said the majority of the crimes are likely associated with ongoing gang violence.”There are a lot of different factors (into why there is an increase in crime), but we think the carjackings are more often a crime of convenience,” O’Toole said. The latest act of violence happened on Wednesday, when a victim of Hispanic descent was flagged down by a dark-skinned black male and a Hispanic male in the area of Goldfish Pond around noon.”He stopped his car and the suspects asked him to bring them to get gasoline,” O’Toole said. “While driving on Brookline Street, one of the suspects pulled a gun on the victim.”The Hispanic suspect allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat of the victim’s 2001 brown Pathfinder, while the black male got into the passenger seat and they fled the scene. The black male is described as being 5-feet, 6-inches tall, with a muscular build, wearing a blue shirt and jean shorts, while the Hispanic male is described as being bald, with a long mustache hanging below his chin, wearing a white hat, yellow shirt, jeans shorts and work boots. Both were considered to be armed and dangerous. No arrests have been made in the incident, which O’Toole said is being actively investigated.Prior to the carjacking, gun violence rang out in the city on Tuesday night.A 17-year-old Lynn boy was shot in the back while playing basketball at the Bennett Street playground around 8 p.m., and is currently listed in stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Two Hispanic male suspects were seen riding on the same black and silver bicycle, and allegedly circled around the victim before the suspect who was perched on the back pegs of the bike opened fire.”We believe the shooting was gang-related,” O’Toole said. Then, about 10 minutes later, reports flooded the police department that several shots had been fired at the Cook Street playground. While O’Toole said neither shell casings nor victims were located at the scene, shots are still believed to have been fired.More violence rocked the city at approximately 12:20 a.m., Wednesday, when a 20-year-old Lynn man’s neck was grazed by a bullet after the back window of a Honda Accord he was driving was shot out at the corner of Lawton and Beacon Hill avenues.”The victim said he heard three gunshots and then the back window exploded,” O’Toole said. “He said he didn’t see where the shots came from.”One of the victim’s passengers traded seats with him and drove the victim to a local hospital where he was treated and released. O’Toole said the incident is also being investigated as gang-related.All of the violent incidents have City Councilor at large Daniel Cahill concerned for the safety of city residents.”It’s frightening, especially in the daytime for a carjacking to happen,” he said. “You assume you’re at least safe during the day in some respect, but this seems like it was brazen violence, and that is very scary.”Cahill said the rash of incidents should stimulate city government to prioritize public safety over all other funding.”These criminals have a total disregard for everyone else,” he said. “Everyone’s got problems, but there is no excuse for shooting and carjacking in the middle of the day. It’s just out of control.”Aside from Wednesday’s alleged carjacking, O’Toole said another report of a carjacking on July 17 has turned out to have been a misinterpretation due to a language barrier. The incident was originally reported as having happened at the intersection of Newhall, Broad and Silsbee streets, where a man allegedly flashed a gun at the victim and stole his car. The vehicle was later found in Market Square, and it was determined that an argument may have sparked the incident.Police continue to investigate anoth
