The Marblehead girls swimming team captured the Division 2 state title in its final race over Wayland on Sunday. With the score tied going into the medley relay, the Magician team of Ryan Alexander, Hannah Verrette, Katherine Foley and Megan Alexander finished with a time of 3:32, one second ahead of its competition, and the championship was won.”It was the most spectacular meet I’ve been to in 24 years,” said Marblehead coach Sue Guertin. “It was nail-biting. We were ahead and then we were behind. I can’t believe we won. I’ve known most of these girls since they were three months old and these seven girls really pulled it off. It was a really good day.”Ryan Alexander placed second in the 200 free (1:53.69), and Toireasa Rafferty-Millett was third in the same event (1:54.80). In the 200 individual medley, Megan Alexander was second (2:06.11) and Foley finished third with a personal best of 2:10.19. Foley was also second in the 100 butterfly (58.67) and Rafferty-Millett was seventh with a personal best of 59.84. Megan Alexander also won the 500 free (4:58.75, personal best) and Sara Daher was seventh (5:19.44, personal best).”It took me 24 years, but it finally happened,” Guertin said in reference to her tenure at the helm of the Marblehead swimming program. “Wayland had 19 girls and we had seven. They were putting three or four kids in each event to our one, but we were just finishing higher than them. They even took their faster swimmer and put her in the final race. The kids really stepped up.”The 200 free relay team of Foley, Daher, Tyler Phillips and Rafferty-Millett was third (1:42.50), and Verrette was third in the 100. In the 100 backstroke, Ryan Alexander was second (58.09) and Daher placed sixth (1:01.09) while Verrette was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.46, personal best).
