After struggling against Everett last season, the Marblehead girls basketball team ventured to the home of the Crimson Tide and beat the opposition for the second time this season.Kathryn Digiammarino had a huge game for the Magicians, scoring a game-high 14 points and 20 rebounds. Lindsey Cohen scored six but helped her team dominate the glass as she pulled down 13 boards.Marblehead (7-4) opened the contest on a 16-4 run and led 30-12 at the half. The eventual victors were outscored 14-11 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the fourth but the Magicians’ stellar beginning and advantage in rebounding were too much for the Crimson Tide to overcome.GIRLS HOCKEYMarblehead 6, Shrewsbury 1At the O’Keefe Center, Magician Ally Healy had a hat trick and Emmarose Winder had three assists as the team improved its record to 6-2.Grace Lavoie opened the scoring for Marblehead, Healy grabbed her first and Katie Zarinsky scored as well before the horn sounded on the first period. Shrewsbury scored its lone goal in the second period before Healy scored the first two goals of the second period and Rachel Ullian added a goal of her own.Molly Depew made 23 saves in the win.SWIMMINGMatignon 94, St. Mary’s 76At the Tech Pool, the Spartans dropped their first meet of the season despite first place finishes in four events.”The kids did awesome,” said St. Mary’s (2-1) coach Michele Brewster.Dominic Barceleau (2:28.25 in the 200 freestyle), Annie Mailhot (2:50.63 in the 200 individual medley) and the 200 freestyle medley team of Baron Lincoln, Barceleau, Eddie Traniello and Ralph Bertrand (1:50.34) were all victorious for the Spartans.In addition, the St. Mary’s’ boys 50 freestyle captured places one-through-three: Bertrand (26), Traniello (26.19) and Lincoln (28.03).TRACKState RelaysAt Boston, the Marblehead girls came up with some big performances at the Division 3 state relays. Leading the way for the girls were the 4×400 and 4×800 teams. The 4×400 team of Gretchen Rowe, Madeline Piela, Maura Tubridy, and Emma McGuirk took third against the best teams in the state with a blistering time of 4:16. The 4×800 team of Rowe, Piela, Tubridy, and Chloe Heskett turned in the fastest Marblehead time in years with 10:00.25 clocking. This time ensures them a spot in the seeded heats.
