SWAMPSCOTT – he Swampscott football team had already lost one game in the final moments this season. The Big Blue were determined not to let it happen again.Marblehead’s Dan Colbert brought his team downfield 87 yards, keeping the possession alive on converted fourth down completions, with the drive ending on a 22-yard score to receiver Phillip Coughlin as time ran out to bring the Magicians to within 21-20.Click here for a photo gallery of this gameOn the ensuing conversion pass that would have given the club the win, the left signal caller rolled out and fired, but the ball was knocked down by defensive back Brian Sullivan, and Swampscott had the nail-biting win.”We wanted to go for the win in that situation, and didn’t want to try for overtime,” said Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff, whose club finished at 5-6.’It’s a shame that the season’s not five more games because Dan (Colbert) has really come into his own the past five games,” Rudloff said. “This is his first taste of football in two years (after missing last season due to injury), and he’s really improved the past few games.”The Magicians, who had lost tailback Will Quigley in the opening quarter and wide receiver Ryan Stanojev in the third (due to injuries), had driven to Swampscott’s 10 after runs of 8, 37, and three yards by fullback Oliver Kim. Yet Kim, who also is the team’s kicker, was stopped on fourth down. Runs by back Phillip Larkin and quarterback Michael Walsh gained nine yards, where the team faced a third-and-1 with less than two minutes remaining. No matter, as Walsh found teammate A. J. Baker on a screen along the near sidelines, and Baker outran everyone for an 81-yard go-ahead score, giving the Big Blue a 21-14 lead.”I had good blocks from (Peter) Yasi and (Zach) Beermann to give me the open field,” explained Baker, who ran along the sidelines to give Swampscott the lead for the first time with the score.Walsh (19-26-2-306) engineered the tying score right before the failed Marblehead possession. On second-and-four from the Big Blue 34, he teamed with Baker for 22 yards to Marblehead’s 44. Moments later, on third-and-six from the 20, he connected on a short screen to Beermann for the necessary yardage, keeping the drive alive. Another third down completion, this time to receiver Patrick Costin, gave a team another first at the 22. The drive culminated with another third-down strike, one more to Beermann for the game-tying score.”Mike plays better when the flow of the game is like that,” Swampscott coach Steve Dembowski said of his quarterback. “He’s he’s shown that all year long.”Trailing 14-0 after a very shaky first half, Swampscott (8-3) received the second half kickoff, and Walsh directed his squad 75 yards to cut the deficit in half.. Walsh (15-49) gave his team a first down at the Big Blue 35 with a three-yard gain, then hit Beermann at the Magicians 10 with a perfect 47-yard strike. Walsh scored moments later on an eight-yard keeper. The Magicians took early favor on their first possession after the opening kickoff, with Quigley doing the bulk of the work. He carried the ball five times on the six-play drive. He finished it with a nifty 46-yard scamper into the end zone, where he ran towards the middle, cut outside towards the right, and down the far sidelines for the game’s first points a little over three minute’s in. It was his 18th touchdown of the season.Walsh was picked off by Coughlin at Swampscott’s 34 when the Big Blue began their first possession, yet the team got the ball back when Costin intercepted Colbert (8-15-1-120) at the one. However a fumble at the 16 by Walsh was recovered by defensive end Matt Perlow, and the Magicians quickly took advantage. Quigley (8-82) ran twice for eight yards, spotting the ball on the eight. Colton Dana took it in on the next play to increase the Marblehead lead to 14-0 late in the quarter. Both teams traded turnovers in the early moments of the second quarter (there were 6 overall in the first 14:47, an
