The Marblehead football team proved last night that while ball control and clock management are fine and dandy, all you need to do is to put up points. The Magicians only ran one offensive play for the first 16:45 of the first half (and had the ball for 20 seconds overall), as they fought off a stubborn Winthrop squad, 27-18, at Piper Field.Winthrop18Marblehead27 The Vikings (2-8, 2-3) held the ball for the first 5:33, with a ten-play drive bringing them to Marblehead’s 35. Yet a fumble on fourth down was recovered by Marblehead lineman Chris Piper at the Magicians 45. Southpaw signal-caller Dan Colbert (3-6-1-118) struck quickly, hitting teammate Will Quigley at the Winthrop 30. He lost his balance momentarily, quickly regained it, then outran the coverage for the game’s first points.”Aside from screen passes, that was the first time all season that we’ve thrown to Will,” said Marblehead coach Jim Rudloff, whose squad improved to 5-5 (3-1). “That’s because he’s a great pass blocker. But we saw something with their (Winthrop’s) split safeties, and we went with the play.”The Vikings came right back, converting on a fourth-and-4 from the Marblehead 48 when quarterback James Barker picked up ten yards top bring the ball to the 38. Moments later, the team was aided by a ten-yard penalty against the Magicians, putting Winthrop at the 18. Halfback Nick McCarthy gave the team a first down at Marblehead’s 8 with a seven-yard burst around the left side. McCarthy brought the club to within 7-6 two plays later going through the middle on the third play of the second stanza.Yet the Magicians struck again, this time via special teams, when returner Ryan Stanojev fielded McCarthy’s ensuing kick at the 23, cut through the middle of the field, and outraced everyone to increased the lead to 14-6.Winthrop responded by putting together another solid drive, and converting another fourth down in the process. With the ball at Marblehead’s 28, Barker (8-21-1-112) hit McCarthy on a swing pass, and the back carried it to the 17. McCarthy added his second score two plays later on a 14-yard run, with Marblehead holding to a 14-12 edge.Marblehead began the second half with a strong nine-play, 60-yard drive. Quigley (17-110) turned a third-and-7 from the Vikings 40 into a first down at the 33 with his seven-yard run. Four plays later, Stanojev gained enough yardage on fourth-and-1 from the 24 to keep the possession going. Colbert connected with Stanojev on the next play, finding the receiver in perfect stride in the left hand corner of the end zone for a 20-12 lead.”That (the touchdown pass) was Dan’s call,” said Rudloff. ‘ “He said to me, “‘I can get this one, coach.” Dan throws a good ball, and he does a really good job.”The Vikings, aided by a pair of 15-yard penalties, strung together a 10-play, 84-yard drive with back Chris Strangie scoring on a ten-yard run to bring Winthrop to within 20-18. However, the Magicians used just 42 seconds to get the score back. Colbert teamed with Quigley on a 41-yard strike to Winthrop’s 15. Quigley then ran through the Vikings defense on the next play for his second score of the contest and the game’s final points.
