MANCHESTER-ESSEX – There were three major factors in Wednesday’s quarterfinal game between the Lynnfield and Rockport boys soccer teams at Manchester-Essex.Those three factors of the game – a 1-0 Pioneers loss in a shootout – were: the wind, Rockport keeper Keady Segel, and Lynnfield keeper Jerry Reid.Reid was outstanding but Segel was far beyond what you would expect from a high school keeper. In the spring, Segel is the keeper for the Boston Bolts, the No. 1 youth team in New England. The third factor was the wind. It blew in the same direction for the entire game and gusted up to 35 miles per hour. Each team had an advantage in one half but neither team was able to capitalize with the wind at its back.”These two teams are copies of each other,” Rockport coach Dave Curley said. “The speed, the skills and the passing were outstanding. Our keeper is probably the best around, but Reid is up there with him.””We played what was probably our best game under these wind conditions and we lose in a shootout,” Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe said. “Jerry Reid was great in the net and the rest of the team let it all hang out on the field tonight.”Rockport entered with the second seed and a 15-2-1 record. During the regular season the Vikings had defeated the Pioneers 2-1. Lynnfield was the No. 7 seed with a record of 11-5-3.Right from the opening whistle, both teams played a wide-open, physical game. In the first half, Rockport had the wind and was able to put five good shots on Reid, who stopped every one of them. In the few times that the Pioneers got out of their end, Segel would make an amazing save and keep the Pioneers off the board. The half ended with no scoring. The second half was just like the first, only Lynnfield had the wind. Segel made three saves in the second half on what looked like certain goals. After the end of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team had scored, prompting a shootout.Rockport won the toss and had to go first. Senior Cam Tibert was the first shooter for the Vikings and he beat Reid low left. Lynnfield’s first shooter was Connor Dario. He missed the net to the left. Rockport was ahead 1-0.The second Viking shooter was Shaffy Roell. He put the ball up and over the crossbar for a miss. Lynnfield’s second shooter was Stephen Knox. He blasted the ball to the low left corner that looked like it was going in when Segel dove across the net, managed to get a few fingers on the shot and tipped it wide. The score remained 1-0.The third shooter for Rockport, Chandler Burnham, buried the ball in the top left corner out of Reid’s reach. This made the score 2-0, Rockport. Lynnfield’s third shooter, Marco Addonizio, beat Segel low right to register what turned out to be the Pioneers’ only score. The fourth shooter for Rockport was Segel. His approach to the ball included a hesitation step; the ball went in low right. Lynnfield’s fourth shooter was Stephen Carangelo. His shot went wide right of the net, giving Rockport a 3-1 lead with one shooter to go. Rockport emerged with the 1-0 victory.Rockport will play Friday at North Reading High School at 3:15 p.m. against Weston.
