SWAMPSCOTT – Swampscott isn’t the only football team that can run a two-minute drill.Winthrop, having allowed an apparent game-winning touchdown with 1:09 left, scored when quarterback James Barker teamed with back Nick McCarthy for a 14-yard TD strike with nine seconds left in the game – and then ran in the conversion – to upset Swampscott, 30-29, at Blocksidge Field Saturday.Click here for a photo gallery. It was not only Winthrop’s first victory, but it also snapped a six-game Big Blue win streak.Winthrop30Swampscott29 Swampscott, playing from behind all day, took the lead with 69 seconds left when receiver A.J. Baker (7-125) caught quarterback Michael Walsh’s over-the-middle pass in the end zone for a 29-22 lead. But that left enough time on the clock for Winthrop, which had engineered scoring drives of 11, 15, and nine plays previously. Starting at his own 23 with 1:05 to go, Barker (9-12-0-125) found James Doherty for 37 yards to put the ball at the Big Blue 40. The two teamed again for seven yards to the 33. After an incompletion, Doherty (7-105) hauled in another from Barker, putting Winthrop at the 26 with 29 seconds left.McCarthy added a six-yard run before being knocked out of bounds, then caught his first pass for six yards to put the Vikings on the 14. Barker then rolled to his right, and hit McCarthy right over the line for a touchdown that made it 29-28 Big Blue – McCarthy’s third score of the afternoon. McCarthy then ran in the two-pointer for the victory.”It’s like a 1,000 pound weight is right off of us,” said Winthrop coach Sean Driscoll. “It’s been a long and hard year for all of us.”(Barker) used the sidelines well with his passes, and the receivers got out of bounds,” Driscoll said. “(McCarthy) has had to battle injuries all year, but he really comes out to play. This is such a huge win for our program.”The Big Blue (6-2, 1-1) trailed, 22-14, entering the final quarter. But they took over at their 37 with 9:28 left, and, with a fourth-and-two at the 45, Walsh (21-27-0-257) hit teammate Zach Beermann for a four-yarder that extended the drive.A 15-penalty against Winthrop put the Big Blue in Viking territory at the 35. Moments later, on fourth-and-four from the 29, Walsh hit receiver Peter Yasi underneath to bring the team to the Vikings 21. Phillip Larkin (13-50) ran for five yards to the 16, and then the Big Blue turned to their book of chicanery on the next play.Walsh pitched to Larkin on the right, and he in turn hit receiver Brian Sullivan in the back of the end zone with the score. Walsh then connected with Beermann on the two-point pass to tie the game at 22 with just over five minutes left.Winthrop (1-7, 1-1) then drove to Swampscott’s 27, but a Barker pass on fourth-and-8 fell incomplete. The Big Blue, taking over with 2:16 to go in the contest, promptly marched to Winthrop’s 26 on completions to Yasi, Beermann, and Baker. After an incompletion, Walsh hit Baker for the go-ahead score, 29-22.Winthrop won the opening toss, and moved 65 yards in 11 plays before Barker hit Doherty for a 13-yard score that, with McCarthy’s conversion, gave the Vikings an 8-0 lead.Beginning at his 43, Walsh moved the Blue downfield and capped the drive with a three-yard run.McCarthy struck again, however, after a 15-play drive, taking it in from the four and adding the conversion to give Winthrop a 16-7 lead.As the half wound down, Swampscott took it from its own 18 to the Winthrop 2, but the drive stalled as time ran out.”We couldn’t do a thing in the first half, and we couldn’t stop them,” said Swampscott coach Steve Dembowski. “Our defense couldn’t hit them, and Winthrop executed very well on its first three possessions. And it was very disappointing not to score from the 2 (on the last play of the first half). We definitely have to play better, and we definitely have to do so every week.”Larkin brought the Big Blue to within 16-14 on the Big Blue’s initial possession of the second half on a 15-yard pass from Walsh, but
