Hanney, who also owns a chain of movie theaters, last month purchased the 28-acre property that closed under deep debt last year after 55 years in business.”I am honored to welcome audiences back to NSMT for my first season here in Beverly,” Hanney said. “My goal for NSMT in 2010 is to create a season that celebrates musical theater and delivers the excellent quality and intimate atmosphere that audiences expect from NSMT.”Cape Playhouse Artistic Director Evans Haile will be the new artistic director at NSMT and the 2010 musical season includes “Gypsy,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “A Christmas Carol.”Curtains will rise on the 2010 season in July with the Broadway classic “Gypsy,” which runs July 6- 25. The musical was inspired by the life of the burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. It is the story of the quintessential stage mother Mamma Rose, who pushes her two children into show business at any cost to fulfill the dream of stardom she never achieved herself. It is a story of ambition, suppressed dreams and sacrifice.”Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” takes center stage Aug. 3-22. This Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical tells the biblical story of Joseph, his devoted father and jealous brothers. Filled with high energy dance numbers, the story of Joseph’s adventures is told through a variety of musical styles – everything from country to calypso to rock and roll.”Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” will be looking to lift your spirits if not your wallets Sept. 21 through Oct. 10. The show is based on the 1988 hit movie starring Steve Martin and Michael Caine, who are con artists working their schemes on the French Riviera. Hilarity ensues when the two cons engage in a friendly competition to see which one can swindle an innocent heiress out of her fortune. The fourth show of the season is “A Chorus Line,” which is at NSMT Nov. 2-21. The Pulitizer Prize-winning musical follows 17 dancers as they compete for spots in the chorus of a Broadway musical. The star on the tree is the revival of NSMT’s production of “A Christmas Carol” in December. Jon Kimball will be returning to direct the show, which has become a cherished North Shore tradition during the holiday season.Season subscriptions are available now and single tickets for all NSMT shows go on sale to the public May 1.
