LYNN – Toyota planned today to add 300,000 Prius hybrids to their list of the more than 7 million cars the company has recalled since last fall. The Prius recall is reportedly due to a problem with the braking system, while the multi-model/year recalls announced since last September – including 3 million in January – are to address sudden acceleration due to a pedal defect and interference with floor mats.Service technicians at Atlantic Toyota on the Lynnway have been working non-stop since last week when parts began arriving to fix accelerator pedals in Carollas, Camrys, Avalons, Matrix, Highlander, Tundra and Sequoia models, as well as the Pontiac Vibe. The anticipated Prius recall will add to that hefty workload.”I think that they’re going to announce sometime in the next day or two a remedy for the (Prius) situation, which to my understanding is that it is a software update to the system, it shouldn’t be a large issue. In the scheme of things it is a minor repair,” said John Biggio, general manager of Atlantic Toyota. “Prius, under most circumstances, you would never notice any issues with the car.”The automaker is still deciding how to handle Prius repairs in the U.S., which will cover 100,000 of the latest version of the gas-electric car that have been on the market since last May, but said that its options are a service campaign that will notify owners to bring their cars in for repairs or a full safety recall.Biggio said that the recall on the original eight Toyota vehicles has significantly affected Atlantic’s service department and sales. The had discontinued selling the eight affected models, which makes up 60 percent of the business.”We have a lot more cars coming through the service department on a daily basis than usual, and we have longer hours because of it. Notices just went out this weekend so we are going to get more activity now starting tomorrow and Wednesday through the next 30 days.”We are going to be very busy from a service standpoint,” Biggio said. “We have since started to sell those vehicles again and we are (making repairs to) our own inventory as we sell the cars. If somebody were to come in and buy the car we would do the repairs prior to delivering it.”Biggio remains confident Toyota sales will rebound as the public recognizes the traits that made Toyota the top selling brand in the world: quality and reliability.”It hasn’t been smoke and mirrors for the last 50 years. They really do build a quality car. It’s not to say there’s not a problem with this, but Toyota is working quickly to address and it,” Biggio said.Over time, the friction caused by the design of the gas pedal will make depression more difficult, and in some cases, cause the pedal to stick around 1200 RPMs, or at 50 miles per hour. Still, Biggio said there is no need for immediate worry.”Unless you’re experiencing an issue with the car, you have no reason to be fearful of driving it. Some people who bought cars recently are afraid to drive them and there is no reason for fear there. The cars are safe to drive. I’m driving one that hasn’t been repaired yet. My mother is driving one that hasn’t been repaired yet.”
