SALEM – Marsha Finkelstein of the nonprofit Moving Beyond Coaching and Consulting in Salem has planned a 10-week structured job club to help unemployed and underemployed North Shore residents get back to work. The “Moving Beyond Career Club” is a part of WaggleForce, a new nationwide network of local career clubs inspired by Tory Johnson, the workplace contributor for Good Morning America and CEO of Women for Hire. Johnson is also author of the 2009 New York Times best seller From Fired to Hired.”The program is a 10-week job club. It’s made up of anywhere between five and 15 people. The idea is to use the resources in the group so that someone who might be looking for a job, say, in the medical field, can get some feedback on how to find a job in the field from a doctor,” Finkelstein said. “WaggleForce got its name from bees. It’s what honey bees do in the hives – they share resources and they guide each other.”Finkelstein said the club will act as both a support and coaching group that discusses everything from resumes and cover letters to effective networking skills.”It’s a challenging time for people to be looking for work and I’ve been there myself. The structure (of the job club) will be helpful. Having that support system makes all the difference,” Finkelstein said. “A lot of job seekers are out doing it by themselves. Why should we be hanging out in the breeze when we can have a group of people who care about the goals and dreams of each other?”Finkelstein has taught, coached and counseled job seekers for more than 15 years and sees leading the group as an opportunity to bring together an interesting group of people to teach each other how to own the decisions that they make.”I actually have always loved that there is something about the difference between giving something to someone and teaching them. I’m the teacher. I want that person to really feel ownership,” Finkelstein said. “We want to make sure we’re getting them to the places they want to go. I feel honored to be able to help facilitate this process. I’ve always been drawn to helping people work to get something. There is nothing better than watching someone who did the work and got the job.”The first session is on January 21 and will be hosted by a local North Shore business, which is yet to be determined. The club is still open to new members, but not everyone who applies will get in. The ideal members of this club are unemployed or underemployed and looking for an ongoing support system to stay motivated and are willing to commit to attending each week. Members must be willing to and enjoy sharing their knowledge and opinions, to be of service, have a good sense of humor in the face of adversity, and to be able to listen to others and try new things. For more information or to join the Moving Beyond Career Club, visit www.waggleforce.com or contact Marsha Finkelstein at [email protected]
