SWAMPSCOTT – Dr. Ronald Plotka is certain his new business venture, Mouthwatchers, and the company’s new and innovative Nano Silver Anti-bacterial Toothbrush will advance oral hygiene and help promote overall health and wellness. The Swampscott dentist came up with a name for the company nearly 30 years ago, inspired by a patient who was a member of WeightWatchers, with the idea that Mouthwatchers could one day have the same success promoting oral health as WeightWatchers has had trimming its members’ waistlines. He teamed with his longtime friend Tony Anderson to come up with a vision for the company, and their research led to the creation of the Nano Silver Anti-bacterial Toothbrush.Anderson actually came up with the concept for the Nano Toothbrush, an American version of a toothbrush he discovered while traveling in Asia. And it was Anderson who was able to secure a manufacturing company in Korea to make the product.Tony Gallugi, chief financial officer for Mouthwatchers, said the Nano Toothbrush thoroughly cleans teeth and gums using nylon, floss-tip like bristles that make up the head of the brush and which are able reach areas in the mouth traditional toothbrushes cannot.A year and a half in design, it uses particles of silver – or nanosilver – to inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria by 99.9 percent, Gallugi said.”It took a year to design the handle and it took about six months to design the bristles,” Gallugi said. “We were looking for the uniqueness of the bristles.”Since it hit the market, Gallugi said the Nano Toothbrush has amassed positive reviews from customers and dentists alike.Touting the product, Plotka explained many people are unaware that bacteria from inside of the mouth remains on the toothbrush after you finish brushing. This bacteria is then able to jump from one toothbrush to another, he said. With the Nano Toothbrush, that is not possible, he said, because the bacteria and fungus is killed by the nanosilver.”This is a one of a kind brush. It has never been done before,” Plotka said. “Every family in the world should have this brush.”Mouthwatchers is ramping up national marketing for the toothbrush, and has an Arizona-based public relations consultant helping in that cause.”The more we build, the more we can help,” Gallugi said. “We’re focused on value and what we had to do and it took off, and we’re excited.”Mouthwatchers recently reached a deal with Whole Foods natural and organic grocery chain, which will soon sell the Nano Silver Toothbrush in select stores. Mouthwatchers was approved by Whole Foods to present health and wellness initiatives in its stores.”We had to prove to Whole Foods that (the Nano Silver Toothbrush) was safe to bring into the environment,” Gallugi said. “It is 98 percent below the EPA guidelines for drinking water.”While Mouthwatchersh for now has exclusivity in the United States and Canada, Plotka expressed his desire to expand into a global franchise within five to 10 years. Mouthwatchers plans to kick off research today for a vitamin toothpaste that the team hopes to develop and market sometime next year. Later this year, Mouthwatchers plan to release a travel toothbrush and a power-toothbrush, all featuring the nanosilver bristles. In addition to Whole Foods markets, the Nano Silver Toothbrush can be purchased online at mouthwatchers.net.
