The Daily ItemLocal rapper, activist and poet Walnut-Da Lyrical Genie will headline a pre-record release/ birthday bash concert at the Neal Rantoul Theater at Lynn Arts this Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.The concert/ party will highlight a number of diverse local artists playing everything from hip-hop to folk music, poetry, dancing and comedy and will be capped off by Walnut, who will perform tracks from his upcoming second album set to be released in October.Walnut’s music is a mixture of rap, r&b and spoken word and his new album features a host of local artist cameos.”There are a lot of different artists on the CD. I did a lot of different types of things this time around, political stuff, relationship stuff and some humor,” he said.In trying to come up with a promotional concert for the album, Walnut says he focused in on the diverse musical community in Lynn that he says is under-utilized and under-appreciated.”There are so many different artists from folk, blues and rap singers to r&b and comedy – it is going to be action-packed,” he said. “The scene (in Lynn) is live, there is so much going on with music in this city.”Walnut’s record label, Shel-Shok Entertainment, is sponsoring the event and is a huge supporter of original compositions and cross genre performances. The line-up for the show includes Hannah Cranton, Big Brotha Sadi, C.Luk, Kirsten and Dave, Your Theatre Company, Divinity Dance Studio, Shante’, Zullo, Chris Keating, Felice Koslen, Dj Radio Sctvoid and Walnut.A Henderson, N.C. native, Walnut grew up in Boston and now lives in Lynn. He has been performing in a variety of settings over the past 20 years and is hoping that he can bring the diverse North Shore music scene – often showcased in clubs in Beverly and Salem – back into Lynn.”There is such a diverse mix of music on the North Shore, I kind of wish I could make this an ongoing thing,” he said. “There are a lot of artists in Lynn that go over to Salem to perform, but there are a lot of great artists right here I would like to get them performing in the city.”The concert will also serve as a party for Walnut, who turns 41 this month, and other June “babies” who he has invited to attend. If You GoLynn Arts is located at25 Exchange St. in Lynn.
