SAUGUS ? Ten comics will get an opportunity tonight to walk away with a $1,000 top prize, a chance to host a night of comedy at Giggles and possibly get the break they have been searching for with the finals of the Giggles Comedy Riot.Forty-four hopefuls have been taking to the microphone at Giggles the past few weeks in preliminary rounds and the top 10 left standing will compete tonight at 7:30 (doors open at 6) for the right to be crowned champion.”This contest gives younger comedians (six years or less professional experience) a shot to really get into comedy and get their big break,” Giggles owner Mike Clarke said. “There is no doubt we have a great final show assembled for (tonight) and people attending will certainly be entertained by this group of undiscovered talent.”Not only will those in attendance get a chance to see the up-and-coming stars of comedy, but they will be entertained by Lenny Clarke who will serve as the host of the evening.”I am truly excited about (tonight),” Lenny Clarke said. “You never know what you are going to see in one of these riots but you know it is going to be a good show as these comedians chase their dream.”Lenny Clarke says he loves the riot concept as his career got started thanks to a competition like the Giggles Comedy Riot.”It had to be about 30 years ago when I did the San Francisco Comedy Competition and got discovered by television director James Komack (Welcome Back Kotter),” Lenny Clarke said. “I did not do that well in the competition out there but I must have done something to gain the interest of Komack.”Clarke said Komack wanted him to shoot a TV pilot after seeing him in San Francisco but an actors’ strike canceled the shoot. Nonetheless, Lenny Clarke was on his way after competing in San Francisco.”Thursday night is all about the contestants,” Lenny Clarke said. “I am there just to keep things moving to make sure all the contestants have a level playing field. I am completely neutral.”The great thing about a night like this for the audience is that you can always say, “I was there when so-and-so got discovered,'” Lenny Clarke said. “This is like going to a Triple-A baseball game. You may get the chance to see the comic equivalent of seeing Nomar Garciaparra or Dustin Pedroia before they made the big leagues.”Tickets for tonight’s comedy riot final are $25.
