BOSTON – The first North American touring production of the Broadway smash hit “The Color Purple” presented by Oprah Winfrey will open in Boston next week. The show, which has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards, is based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the film by Steven Spielberg. It is the unforgettable and inspiring story of a woman named Celie, who finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discover her unique voice in the world. “The Color Purple” is about hope and the healing power of love.Felicia Fields, who plays Sofia in the touring production, has been with the show since its inception in August 2003.”I love the show,” she said. “It’s one of the very few that have meaning – I feel like I’m contributing and helping someone’s life.Fields, who has been performing for more than 20 years, said she planned on going into teaching, not performing, but a twist of fate led her to the stage.”I was director of church choir,” she said. “Someone heard me sing and wanted demos for a show. I helped them and other people heard me. I was asked to audition for “The Wiz.” I started working and haven’t stopped since.”Fields said she loves portraying Sofia because the character is multifaceted.”She is a heavy girl but has a real sensuality,” she said. “I get beaten down but show my resilience. She is a strong character. The character is no nonsense but very funny at the same time. My character allows people to relax in what is a heavy show. Sofia lets people know it’s okay to breathe and it’s okay to laugh.”Fields said the main message she would like to convey about the show is it’s not only for African Americans.”Everyone who comes gets something out it,” she said. “This show touches people on so many levels. There is great singing, dancing and entertainment but it also addresses universal issues. I have seen all kinds of people leave crying but enjoying themselves at the same time. This show will leave you transformed in some way. It speaks to the soul and that is the only reason I’ve been here so long.”Fields earned a Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of Sofia on Broadway. The Chicago native received a 2006 Theatre World Award, a Clarence Derwent Award and two Broadway.com Awards.Fields said when she is not on the road touring she likes to spend time with her family.”I like to do nothing,” she said. “I watch the game show channel. Being in my own bed is always fantastic.”She added she loves to cook and her favorite dish is smothered pork chops but her macaroni and cheese is a favorite among family and friends. The production will be at Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theatre June 16-28.Tickets are $28-$100 and are available at the box office, online at www.citicenter.org or by calling 866-348-9738.
