NAHANT ? What do a 25-foot lobster, a tetrahedron and a 15-foot tall scuba diver have in common? They will all be flying high over Long Beach next weekend. On Saturday, June 6 from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. kite aficionados from all over New England will gather at the Nahant Beach Reservation for the free Kites Over New England (KONE) festival.KONE, which is a non-profit group comprised of more than 135 kite enthusiasts, has dedicated itself for more than two decades to the art of kite flying and sharing that art with newcomers to the sport. Each year approximately 400 people attend the annual event and the group hopes to have an even larger turnout this year. The family-oriented event will feature a stunt kite competition with many of New England’s top fliers.Kites Over New England President Gary Quinton said everyone is welcome to attend.”KONE members will be on hand to help people get their kites in the air,” he said. “KONE will give a seminar for people who want to learn how to fly stunt kites. We’re trying to make stunt flying more open to the public. We’ll explain the rules and get people comfortable with idea of competition.”The skies will be filled with an amazing display of kites and there will be plenty of family-orientated fun on the ground as well.”We’re doing something called the running of the bowls,” Quinton said. “These are parachute-type kits you attach to you and run with. They are about eight feet in diameter and when they fill with air there is a lot of resistance or pull. The Red Sox use them for wind sprints during spring training. Everyone can try running with the bowls.”A very popular event among the younger set is a new take on the pinata.”We have a candy drop for kids,” Quinton said. “We drop candy from a kite. That usually takes place around noon and it’s a lot of fun for the kids.”Vendors will be on site selling kites and kite accessories. But there may not be any food vendors on site so attendees are encouraged to bring their own food and beverages.Additional information is available at www.kone.org.
