East BostonIn a tradition almost as old as the Hot Dog Safari itself, former Lynnfield resident Eddie Andelman recently prepped himself for his annual fund-raiser with a Hot Dog Breakfast at the Capitol Diner on Union Street.Old Neighborhood franks – make in Lynn by the Demakes family – were on the menu, and Andelman made short work of a plateful that were expertly cooked, and served on a buttered, toasted roll. This year, Andelman is handing the reins of the fund-raiser over to his three sons – Lynnfield High grads Danny, David and Michael Andelman of Phantom Gourmet fame. The 20th annual Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari, one of Boston’s premier family and charity events, is on deck Sunday, May 31, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Suffolk Downs in East Boston, with all proceeds benefitting Cystic Fibrosis/The Joey Fund.”I wanted to make sure the event will continue for many years and my sons have a lot of experience running events of this kind,” said Andelman, the Godfather of Sports Radio who started the event with a bus ride for 200 people to the Windham Bar & Grill in Connecticut. It has steadily grown each year with thousands upon thousands now attending and last year more than $250,000 was raised, increasing its grand total to more than $3.25 million since its inception. The Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari includes plenty of food and soft drinks (hot dogs, sausages, Richardson’s ice cream from Middelton, Dunkin’ Donuts, Nantucket Nectars, Entenmann’s, etc.), as well as a wide variety of fun activities for children, a full card of live horse racing with a 12:45 p.m. post time for adults, and live broadcasting from 1-3 PM on 96.9 WTKK-FM Talk.”Our father, Eddie, got this great event going and he’s still a big part of it,” David Andelman explained. “His sons are going to keep it going, even stronger through our Phantom Gourmet connections, for at least another 20 years.”Countless hot dogs and sausages, cooked by members of the Massachusetts National Guard, are represented by the following companies: Kayem Brats, Fenway Franks, Fuddruckers, Sir Franks-A-Lot, Old Neighborhood and The Sausage Guy.
