LYNN – St. Mary’s and Lynn English gave the fans in the bleachers at Fraser Field on Monday their money’s worth in the title game of the 27th Nipper Clancy Memorial Tournament. In a game worthy of the finals, the teams traded body blows for seven innings. It was the Spartans, though, who staved off a final-inning rally by the Bulldogs to take a 6-5 win and their fifth consecutive Clancy title when reliever Ryan Beliveau completed his second save in as many games by getting Gabe Smith with the tying run at third base.Click here for a photo gallery.”That was a battle right to the finish,” St. Mary’s coach Derek Dana said. “English played fantastic and it came right down to the last pitch, as it should have.”St. Mary’s catcher Angelo Codispoti was named the Skip Morrison Tournament MVP. The transfer from English was 2-for-3 in the championship game and drove home what turned out to be the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.”Angelo had a tremendous tournament and a tip of the cap to him and St. Mary’s,” English coach Joe Caponigro said. “We battled right to the end and I’m proud of my guys for that.”This one was anything but a walk in the park for St. Mary’s (14-6), as it had to survive two late rallies by the Bulldogs (14-6). Beliveau came on in relief of Jeremy Tranfaglia to get St. Mary’s out of the sixth inning when English had the tying run 90 feet from home.Tranfaglia was outstanding in only his second start of the season, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.”Jeremy comes to practice every day and works hard, and it paid off (Monday),” Dana said. “He wanted the ball, we gave it to him and he pitched great.”Beliveau, the Pip Kennedy Award winner as St. Mary’s MVP, made things interesting to start the seventh when he walked Eric Bransfield on four pitches to begin the inning. Caponigro then went to his bench, summoning Roberto Reyes to pinch-hit for Brendan Carritte.Reyes, the Bulldogs’ normal catcher, was on the bench because of a tweaked ankle. Beliveau got him to chop to Anthony Disciscio at first for the first out with Bransfield going to second on the play.Anthony Ortiz then increased the tension in the stands when he lofted a single to right, scoring Bransfield to make it 6-5 and put the tying run into scoring position.Beliveau then got the dangerous Esteban Paula to bounce back to the mound for out No. 2. With Ortiz now standing 90 feet from home as the tying run, Codispoti made a game-saving play when he plucked ball one to Gabe Smith out of the dirt. Two pitches later, Smith fouled out to Disciscio at first to end the drama.”That’s the type of kid Ryan is. He wants to be in there at the end,” Dana said. “And we needed him to produce, and he did.”English got the scoring started in the second when Richie Arias, winner of the Jack Barry Sportsmanship Award, singled with one out. He stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring on Dani Vincente’s triple to the fence in right.Vincente won the Sam Mitchell Award as English’s MVP for his efforts over the two days. The Spartans responded to take the lead in the bottom of the second as Beliveau walked and Codispoti singled to put runners on the corners. A Yano Petruzzelli fielder’s choice got Beliveau in from third before Codispoti scored on an error.English poked its nose back in front in the fourth as Arias’ two-out single got a rally started. Vincente singled to put runners on the corners before an error and a Bransfield hit allowed both men to score. It stayed 3-2 until the fifth, when St. Mary’s took the lead for good, sending nine men to the plate, scoring four and knocking English starter Smith from the game.A one-out walk from Nick Day was followed by a bunt single by Joe Kasabuski, who was erased on an Alex Glover fielder’s choice. Alex Fiste then put St. Mary’s ahead with a double up the gap in left that scored Day and Glover for a 4-3 lead.Beliveau followed with a single to center that incre
