Five local boys lacrosse teams got their marching orders for the MIAA state tournament on Friday, and reaction was mixed. Swampscott High’s John Fields was pleased with the Big Blue’s four-seed in Div 3 East, while Lynnfield’s Joe Papagni was disappointed with the Pioneers’nine-seed and a trip to Hanover in the first round.”I think we got shafted a bit,” said Papagni, whose team went 16-2, the second-best record among the Div. 3 East teams. “You win 16 games, two against two Div. 2 tournament teams, and you get sent to Hanover. It’s 90 minutes, through Boston, on a Thursday night.”If Lynnfield beats 8th-ranked Hanover on Thursday (5), it will likely face another South Shore team, top-seeded Scituate, in the quarterfinals.”The good thing is the kids don’t care who we play,” Papagni said. “They’re looking forward to it. We would have almost preferred a play-in game instead of waiting until Thursday.”Swampscott, which at 17-2 had the best record in Div. 3 East, plays on Thursday (5) against the winner of a preliminary round game between Tri-County and Manchester-Essex on Tuesday, at Tri-County, which is a vocational school in Franklin.”I think the MIAA did a great job,” said Fields, though his team was seeded behind two teams with five losses and a team with six losses. “They pretty much went by the book. We could have been a three seed or a five seed, but we’re delighted to have a game on the North Shore.”The Big Blue have traveled to Scituate two of the last three seasons. The site of Thursday’s game is still to be determined, but it will likely be either Manning Field in Lynn, Salem State College or Phillips Park in Swampscott. The Big Blue welcomes the rest until Thursday, to heal some nicks and bumps.”It’s been a long season, and we finished up with a tough game against Salem,” said Fields. “We play 19 games in such a short time period, we can use the break.”St. Mary’s (13-7) earned the 15th seed in Div. 3 east and will play a preliminary round game at home against Ipswich (18th seed; 8-7) on Tuesday (5). The winner gets a trip to Cohasset to play the second-seeded Skippers (14-6) in the first round. In Div. 1 East, St. John’s Prep (16-2) drew the top seed and drew a preliminary round bye. On Saturday (1) at home, the Eagles will play the winner of the preliminary round game between 16th-seeded Lexington (11-9) and 17th-seeded Peabody (11-7), at Lexington on Wednesday.Besides Peabody, other qualifiers in Div. 1 East from the Northeastern Conference were Beverly and Salem. The Panthers (8-9) drew the 19th-seed and play a preliminary round game at Chelmsford on Wednesday (5 p.m.). The winner plays third-seeded Billerica (15-3) in the first round on Saturday (1 p.m.). The 20th-seeded Witches (11-7) play a preliminary round game against Westford Academy on Wednesday (5 ). at Stony Brook School. The winner meets 4th-seeded Barnstable (18-2) on Saturday (1).
