DANVERS – The matchup everyone wanted is here.Tonight, at 8 p.m. at Danvers High, Bishop Fenwick – which features the 6-7 Mike Clifford in the paint, will get to test his mettle against St. John’s Prep, which features Pat Connaughton and Pat Canty -among others.Not only does the game promise to be entertaining, but it should serve as the fitting finale for the North Shore Invitational Tournament at Danvers High.The Prep dispatched Beverly, 84-67 while Fenwick defeated Danvers, 85-63 in the preliminaries Saturday. For the girls, The Crusaders punched their ticket into the final with a 73-54 win over Danvers while Masconomet defeat Beverly, 45-39.Connaughton finished with 25 points Saturday while Sam Baker finished with 15.The Eagles, taking advantage of both their height and Beverly’s man-to-man defense, jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead before Beverly coach Scott Lewis called time out and switched to a fullcourt press.”We were prepared for anything,” said Prep coach Sean Connolly. “But unfortunately, we were sloppy with the ball after that. We had a lot of turnovers.”The change allowed Beverly to creep back into the game, and shortly before the end of the half, the Panthers had cut a double-digit Prep lead down to six.Where St. John’s was red-hot earl in the game, the Eagles had a tough time finding the basket in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Beverly heated up.But St. John’s got it back by late in the second quarter, and the lead jump back up to nine (41-32) at the half.The Prep was never headed after that.Mike Clayton led all Beverly scorers with 18 points.Fenwick 85, Danvers 63At Danvers, Mike Clifford continued his dominance in the paint this season for the Crusaders (17-1), as he scored 33 points and pulled down 24 rebounds. He also had four blocks. Despite Clifford’s excellent night, Phil Eagan was actually named the player of the game. He scored 17 points, pulled down seven rebounds and made six steals.Nolan DiPanfilo scored 17 points, and sits at 989 for his career with an opportunity to crack the 1,000-point mark tonight against St. John’s in the tournament final.GIRLSFenwick 73, Danvers 54At Danvers, Bridget Dellay scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Crusaders (12-6). Fenwick had two other girls in double figures: Lauran Dicarlo (17) and Amy Pelletier (14).The Falcons had two players ind double-figures: ALison MacDonald (14) and Sarah Palazolla (13).The Crusaders will face Masconomet in the tournament, after the Cheiftans defeated Beverly 45-39.
