Swampscott High girls soccer player Skylar Sabbag will be heading to Central Michigan University next fall, where she plans to play soccer.Sabbag has been a force in the midfield for the Big Blue since she cracked the starting lineup as a freshman. She was a Northeastern Conference, Item and Eastern Mass. Second-Team All-Star this fall.Sabbag said she has dreamed of playing Division 1 college soccer since she was a young girl.”I never actually thought it was going to happen,” Sabbag said. “I devote all my time to soccer. It’s awesome to know a dream can come true.”When she’s not playing for the Big Blue in the fall, Sabbag is a member of a South Shore selected club team. As a club team player, she competed in showcases around the country, including the Raleigh Shootout in North Carolina, which is where she was spotted by Central Michigan.Sabbag said she also considered Fairfield University in Connecticut, St. Francis University in Pennsylvania and Bowdoin before deciding on Central Michigan.Although she has done lacrosse and indoor track during her time at Swampscott, Sabbag is sitting out the track season with an injury and had to give up lacrosse for club soccer.Swampscott coach Fred Day said he’s very happy for Sabbag.”She’s been one of my better players over the years,” Day said, adding that Sabbag, like former player Cara Cadigan (now at Tufts), has an excellent work ethic. He said both would always show up for the season ready to play.”She (Sabbag) is a very humble kid who works her tail off. She loves soccer,” Day said.Day said although he had Sabbag in the midfield, he believes she’ll be on defense at the college level.”She’s very strong in the air. She has excellent foot skills and she has good speed,” Day said. “I’m definitely very proud of her. I hope she does well at the next level.”
