MARBLEHEAD – Good teams don’t just win on talent. They win because they rise to the occasion when the situation calls for it ? and, perhaps more importantly, they know how to take charge when the time comes. If you were to run that statement past Marblehead boys basketball coach Wayne Hanscom, he’d be finishing the sentence for you. He saw a firsthand case of it Tuesday night – in his own gym, no less – as the Classical boys struggled for three quarters before bells started going off in their heads. Once the collective wakeup call was given, however, the Rams outscored the Magicians 26-11 in the fourth quarter and slipped out of the Marblehead gym with a 64-56 victory.”They have too many weapons,” said Hanscom, “and when the time came to turn it up a notch, they did. They’re just a better team. When the time came to make plays, they made the plays.”While the stat sheet would indicate that the Rams do not win this game without junior Jarell Byrd (26 points in a sterling end-to-end effort), let the record show that the credit goes to a couple of players who don’t normally see their names in the paper: Michael Gallo and Tony Wonde. Neither eclipsed single digits (Wonde had eight, Gallo six), but what they did down low in terms of rebounding and overall boxing out took a tremendous load off Byrd on a night when all his services were needed on offense.”They were tremendous,” Classical coach Tom Grassa said. “And we needed it, because some of our players really struggled.”One of them would be junior Jasper Grassa, who finished with 10 – and half of those came in the final eight minutes.”He couldn’t find any rhythm on offense,” Tom Grassa said, “but he was good on defense. And you can’t have an off night on defense.”Classical was also without the services of Cam Smith for just about the entire first half. The senior guard whooshed a three-pointer to open the game, got saddled with three quick fouls afterward, and didn’t return to the floor until the second half.”That was tough,” said Grassa. “He got those fouls right away, and we had to sit him out.”With all that going against the Rams, this looked to be Marblehead’s night. The Magicians packed it in close, and stayed disciplined on defense, to grab an 18-8 lead in the first half, mainly on three-point shooting by Pat Song (two) and Brandon Lee. But Classical closed the quarter with a 6-0 run, with Nick Grassa hitting a trey at the buzzer to make it an 18-14 deficit. The Rams, 11-3, crept closer in the second quarter, and went to the locker room down by two (30-28).Tom Powers heated up for Marblehead in the third, as did Lee (each had six points in the quarter) and Marblehead stretched its lead to seven (45-38) going into the final eight minutes.”It was really an uphill climb all night,” Grassa said. But Byrd, who scored 10 of his 26 in the final period, hit five straight to open the quarter. Two free throws by Wonde with 5:31 to go tied the game at 47, but Song and Eric Steed hit for Marblehead to make it a four-point game (51-47). Gallo’s three with 4:14 left brought the Rams to within one (51-50), and, finally, with 3:19 to go, Smith connected to give Classical its first lead since the opening seconds (54-53) on a beautiful feed from Byrd. Jasper Grassa’s bucket made it 56-53, and from there, Classical rode out the storm hitting its free throws.”We had to foul, but I didn’t want to have to do that,” said Hanscom, whose team drops to 8-5. “They hit just about every one of their shots.”
