PEABODY – Offense certainly wasn’t at a premium on Monday at McVann-O’Keefe Rink when Lynnfield and Masconomet took the ice in a Cape Ann League battle.Meeting for the second time in 10 days, the teams combined for 41 shots and an amazing 13 goals, with the Chieftains using a three-goal third period to take a 7-5 win and move into a first-place tie atop the CAL standings with Newburyport and Wilmington.”We certainly never expected to score seven against a team coached by Vin (Lynnfield coach Vin Mirasolo),” Masco coach Bill Blackwell said. “It’s a huge, huge win for us in the league.”The teams had met just 10 days earlier, playing to a 2-2 tie in Haverhill in a game that saw the Pioneers (4-4-2, 4-3-1 CAL) battle back from a third-period deficit. Monday’s meeting looked to be going the same way as Lynnfield once again had to play from behind but suffered a series of crucial defensive breakdowns in the final period.”I guess it’s back to the drawing board,” Mirasolo said. The Chieftains (7-2-2, 6-1-2 CAL) came out of the gates flying, applying a ton of pressure on Lynnfield goaltender Craig Cataldo. And the pressure paid off just 5:29 in as Andy Roach one-timed a Tom Brazil pass from behind the net over Cataldo’s glove to make it 1-0.The Chieftains might have gone to the first intermission with an even bigger lead if not for a stellar save by Cataldo on a Stefan Surrette breakaway with 5:20 left in the first, which ended with Masco holding its 1-0 lead.Early in the second period, Masco then flirted with turning the game into a runaway.Just 83 seconds into the period, defenseman Justin Champlain scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Anthony DiBennedetto and Charlie Gendron, off a scramble in the Lynnfield zone to make it 2-0.The pressure kept coming from Masco, which made it 3-0 at 3:59 when Gendron fired home a Keaton Cashin rebound. That could have been a KO to the Pioneers; instead, it sparked one of the craziest stretches of hockey this season.Just 25 seconds after Gendron’s goal, John Lee got the Pioneers on the board when he scored off a Pete Nutile assist. On the very next shift, freshman Dylan Costa took a pass from Greg Meiniger and backhanded a shot over Masco goaltender Warren McCarthy’s shoulder to make it 3-2.The craziness continued as the Pioneers scored their third goal in 58 seconds when Mark Connolly crashed the net and shoveled home the rebound of a Lee shot from the right circle to tie the game.”We finally get three goals, which we haven’t been doing all season,” Blackwell said. “And with our defense, we thought we could get the game over. But then they started to put the pressure on and came back.”A penalty to DiBennedetto at 7:14 for unsportsmanlike conduct gave the Pioneers the game’s first power play. And just two seconds after the penalty expired, Connolly gave Lynnfield its first lead of the game when he tipped home a Nutile rebound to make it 4-3 with 6:14 left in the period. But with 1:40 left on the clock, the Chieftains stole back some momentum when third-liner Andrew Panella scored off a Nick DiPietro pass to tie the game heading to the intermission.”Andrew’s goal was huge for us,” Blackwell said. “Once we got back even, we felt good about things.”One problem for the Chieftains heading into the third, though, was the health of McCarthy, who was replaced by Casey Tudor after a collision late in the second. (McCarthy showed concussion-like symptoms and was advised to go to a hospital, although he had not done so by game’s end.)Just 1:07 into the third, Masco went back in front as DiBennedetto scored off a Ryan Dooley assist to make it 5-4, Chieftains. But once again, the Pioneers charged back as Lee picked up his second goal of the game, assisted by Connolly and Cam Higgins, with 7:59 left to tie the game. But less than a minute later, Masco’s first line struck as Brazil found a loose puck in the crease and shoved it under a falling Cataldo to give Masco a 6-5 lead with 7:25 left.Tudor then hel
