English High is back in the state tournament after missing the cut last year thanks to a 7-1 win over Cambridge Monday at Larson Rink in Winthrop.The Bulldogs (9-2) got things going on a Lindsey Barker goal 2:17 into the game, but Cambridge came back to tie the game before the first intermission. It was all Bulldogs in the second with goals by Vanessa Caruccio, Taylor Brown and Adriana Russell. Mackenzie Clark assisted on the first two and then scored the first goal of the third period to put the Bulldogs up 5-1. She finished with a goal and three assists.Ashley Petrillo and Taylor Brown accounted for the final two English goals. Brown, a defenseman, has 10 goals this season. Ashley Fiandaca picked up three assists and Katie Burt had another solid game in net for the Bulldogs.St. Mary’s 2, Fontbonne 1At Quincy, St. Mary’s trailed at the end of one but rallied with single goals in the second and third periods to stay undefeated and extend its season-long winning streak to 10.”We knew we’d be in for a tough game based on the level of play last time,” said Spartan coach Frank Pagliuca in reference to his team’s 5-3 comeback win over the Ducks earlier in the year.Erin McAndrews tied the game 2:35 into the second period, assisted by Courtney Winters, and Winters (Courtney White, Alex Smith) delivered the game-winner for St. Mary’s with less than five minutes to go in the third on the power play.”We didn’t panic when we were down,” Pagliuca said. “We capitalized on the power play opportunity late in the game. I’m proud of the kids tonight.”Kelsey Magrane made 13 saves in the victory while Fontbonne’s Kristen Connors made 25.St. Mary’s needs one more win or two ties to qualify for the state tournament. It has 12 games remaining on the schedule.Milton 2, Marblehead 0At Milton, Marblehead’s Moe Bradley made 25 saves but her strong performance was bested by Emma Drew’s shutout (24 saves).”We had opportunities, but couldn’t put the puck in the net,” said Magician (5-4-1) coach Emily Hudak. “There were chances when the puck was in the crease, but we just couldn’t finish it off.”Andover 3, Beverly 1At Gloucester, junior Brianna Jackson made 35 saves for Beverly (5-3-1).”They’re a very good team, and it was a good game. We just came up short,” said Panther coach Fiona Rice.Beverly had 21 shots, but only Corinne Woods found the back of the net, assisted by Elizabeth Doherty and Corey Konaxis, 1:49 into the third period.
