LYNN ? A local musician and cancer survivor, who is garnering worldwide attention with her music, will bring her “Yellow Umbrella Tour” to LynnArts on Jan. 25.Singer/Songwriter Christine Baze was 31 years old and living her life to the fullest when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and extensive lymphatic invasion.”When I was 31 and diagnosed, surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy became my world,” she said. ” I decided to try to use my experience and my music to make a difference. I wanted to raise awareness about preventing cervical cancer and became the founder of The Yellow Umbrella Tour (www.theYELLOWUMBRELLA.org) as a way to get the message out to women everywhere, through the thing I love the most – music.”Baze said she decided to call it The Yellow Umbrella Tour because at a low point during her battle with cancer she was watching the classic film “Harold and Maude.””In one scene Maude is walking along in the rain with a bright yellow umbrella,” she said. “Everyone else has dark, black and solemn looking rain gear but Maude is marching through with a bounce in her step under her yellow umbrella. Her spirit was shining through and I felt that no matter what she was up against she could prevail. She was a survivor and so am I.”Baze said everyone needs a yellow umbrella from time to time.”Something to protect from the elements and harsh realities of everyday life,” she said. “Something to use as a tool, in battle, to provide strength against the enemy. Something to inspire and shine brightly when there is only darkness. The Yellow Umbrella Tour was created to bring that light, that spirit, that energy to the fight against cervical cancer.”Baze said The Yellow Umbrella Tour has made more than 100 stops around the country.”The last six years have been quite a ride,” she said. ” I had more than 100 speaking gigs and more recently made a tour of Europe and Africa.”The Yellow Umbrella event is being held in the Neal Rantoul Vault Theater at LynnArts on Jan. 25 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be a multimedia show, with musical performances by Baze and several guest artists.”This is all about sharing music,” Baze said. “I want people to come and enjoy themselves. It’s about celebrating life and community.”Baze, who opened for Sheryl Crow last year, is a Salem resident and recently celebrated the release of her new CD “Ever Changing Colors,” which will be available at the event. The upstate New York native, who moved to the North Shore a decade ago, said this is her fourth CD and it is more personal than her previous releases, as its theme is her battle with cancer.
