LYNN ? Classical’s speed was no match for Malden’s size in the nightcap of the Elmo Benedetto Boy’s Basketball Sunday Jamboree as the Golden Tornadoes emerged with a 40-34 victory at Classical gym.The Rams’ quick guards couldn’t match up with Malden’s Egi Gjikondi. The 6-foot-8-inch center led Malden with 15 points and was dominant on the glass.Classical coach Tom Grassa said the jamboree, in which each exhibition is played in two eight-minute periods, allows teams to perform in a game-type atmosphere.”It gives kids the opportunity to find what it’s like to play in front of a big crowd with scoreboards, referees and an actual-game atmosphere,” he said. “The kids look forward to the jamboree. It has kind of an all-star flavor.”Grassa said the turnout wasn’t as high this year due to scheduling. The Nov. 27 date of Thanksgiving meant there were fewer weeks available in the basketball season, and thus less of an opportunity to hold the jamboree.”It was just one of those years, the way the calendar falls,” Grassa said. “We were almost not going to have it, but all the coaches said they wanted to have it anyway.”Jarell Bird (10 points) and Jasper Grassa (eight) led Classical, which trailed 18-17 at the midway point.Marblehead 32, St. Mary’s 23Marblehead looked dominant early on, jumping out to a 9-0 lead before St. Mary’s was able to right its ship. St. Mary’s recovered enough through jump shots to climb within 13-10 at the halfway point. In the second frame, Marblehead again jumped out to a quick 19-10 edge, led by Tom Powers and Matt Temme. St. Mary’s Tyler Grillo brought the team back within 21-18 with back-to-back shots, but Marblehead pulled away late, going up by as much as 27-18.Tenne (12 points) and Doyle (nine) paced Marblehead’s attack, while Mike Puglielli (six) and Grillo (five) led the Spartans.English 41, Swampscott 19The Bulldogs put forth the day’s most dominant effort, clicking both offensively and defensively. With a 12-5 lead already, English’s Jared Bingham hit back-to-back treys to give his team an 18-5 lead.Long-range shooting brought the Big Blue back within single digits in the second half, but Ryan Woumn (nine points), Eugene Turner (six) and Bingham (six) helped pace a balanced attack that never gave up the lead during the contest.Tech 34, Winthrop 25After falling behind early, the Tigers responded by ending the first frame on a 12-0 run, paced by three-pointers by Garrett Fairweather and Victor Smith. The barrage continued in the second half, as Fairweather (11 points) and Smith (7 points) led the attack. Gavin Mahoney (11 points) and Anthony Hatzisavas (7 points) led the Winthrop effort.Revere 33, Beverly 24Although an early 6-2 start made it seem the Panthers would run away with the match-up, Revere responded by scoring 14 of the next 16 points en route to a 23-11 lead at the halfway point. In the second frame, though, Beverly tightened its defense and fought back within three at 25-22. Revere answered, though, with a short run to emerge with the victory.Revere’s Paul Cinelli led all scorers with 10 points, while teammate Trae Weathers had eight.Salem 31, Fenwick 28The afternoon’s closest contest was also its most physical. A shoving match with five minutes left led to the ejection of two players after both teams’ benches cleared. After a 6-0 start by Salem, neither team led by more the entire way. Salem stretched its lead to four late in the contest, but Fenwick had a chance to tie when the Crusaders were down by three with 10 seconds left. Two tries rimmed out, though, and the Witches hung on.Nolan DiPanfilo of Bishop Fenwick led all scorers with 17 points.Peabody 45, Danvers 25Peabody led the length of the contest, paced by its strong shooting and bigger bodies. The Tanners stretched the lead to 20, 34-14, at its highest point, and the Falcons played evenly the rest of the way to finish the exhibition.
