Malikke Van Alstyne ended his high school football career with a bang, no, make than an explosion.The Salem High running back ran for four touchdowns and amassed 302 yards rushing to lead the Witches to a come-from-behind 34-30 win over Beverly at Hurd Stadium.The Witches went into this one the underdog with a 3-7 record compared to the Panthers 7-3 mark. Although Van Alstyne gave the Witches and early 8-0 lead on a 25-yard run (Brad Skeffington hit Ben Henderson with a conversion pass), the celebration ended in a hurry when Beverly came right back to cut the lead to 8-6. The Panthers took a 14-8 lead after intercepting a pass and then scored again after recovering a Salem fumble in the end zone and driving 80 yards in three plays.Salem battled back late in the first half to cut the 22-8 deficit to 22-14 thanks to a David Hendrick two-yard run (the pass failed). The momentum carried into the second half with Van Alstyne scoring on a 10-yard run (pass failed) to trip the lead to 22-20 and again on a 20-yard run to give Salem the lead for good (Ramon Rodriguez ran in the conversion). Salem gave itself a little breathing room when Van Alstyne scored his fourth touchdown of the day on an eight yard run, but Beverly made things interesting when Salem fumbled the ball on the conversion and the Panthers recovered the ball an ran it back for two points. Beverly scored again with 1:36 remaining to close to within four points, at 34-30, but Salem recovered the onside kick and time ran out on the Panthers.”It was a typical Beverly-Salem classic game,” Salem coach Scott Connolly said. “It was a great game to be a part of. This was a great way to end the season.”Salem started the season 3-0, but lost its next seven games. Connolly was happy to see the seniors go out on a winning note. He said it was also great for the underclassmen to have a nice win to carry them into next year.Van Alystyne finished with more then 1,600 yards rushing for the year and 22 touchdown, all rushing. He broke 16 school records, Connolly said.Xaverian 24,St. John’s Prep 17At Westwood, the Eagles made some mistakes and Xaverian was right there to make sure they hurt. Xaverian came up with a big sack that led to its first touchdown, but The Prep’s Brendan Felder of Lynn tied the game with a 19-yard touchdown run (Bobby Preston kicked the extra point).Xaverian regaine dthe lead when Joe Colton ran back a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. Disaster struck The Prep again in the form of a fumble that led to Xaverian’s next touchdown and a 21-7 lead at the half.The Eagles got the ball back, but fumbled on the first play at their own 15-yard line. Xaverian kicked a field goal to extend its lead to 24-7. Although The Prep made some headway with thanks to a Tyler Coppola four-yard touchdown run and a Preston field goal with 12 seconds remaining, time ran out on the comeback.In other high school football action, Gloucester trounced Danvers, 37-10.
