LOWELL – The mystical, magical tour that was Al Jackson’s career at St. Mary’s came to an end on the wet turf of Cawley Stadium in Lowell as his Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision to the Georgetown Royals.Jackson’s career at St. Mary’s included over 200 wins and numerous league championships. He is hanging up the cleats due to job constraints. The Spartans came into the tourney as the number-10 seed with a record of 8-7-2. Two wins in the tourney over Matignon and Shawsheen, the number 2 seed, brought them to the semifinals on Thursday night. Before the game, Jackson was stressing to the players, “One game at a time. Let’s get ready to do what we do best, hustle and go to the ball.”Georgetown, from the Cape Ann Small, qualified for the tourney as the 14th seed with a record of 7-7-4. In the first two rounds, it defeated Austin Prep and Lowell Catholic.Coach Ron Comeau was high on his keeper, Evan Weagle. He said, “He’s the best in the CAL. He has every skill needed to be a top-flight college keeper.”The game started with both teams making attacks, mainly down the wings. Both keepers, Weagle of Georgetown and Rob Goggin of St. Mary’s, were called on to make several saves each.In the 23rd minute, St. Mary’s broke the ice with a pretty goal by Eric Donaghy. Shaun Borders, who controlled the ball just outside the arc, set him up, and he found Donaghy to his left in the area. He hit him with a lead pass and Donaghy made sure of the shot, hitting the back of the net over the keeper’s right shoulder. This put the Spartans in front, 1-0.Both teams intensified the physical play. The referee allowed them to play a very physical game, calling fouls when they occurred and issuing 2 yellow cards when called for. The half ended with no further scoring. The second half seemed to belong to Georgetown. It started winning more 50-50 balls and it was getting to the ball a little quicker than the Spartans. It was getting more shots on net, some of which would have gone in if not for the acrobatic saves by Goggin in the Spartans net.In the 59th minute, Georgetown scored the tying goal, which was not pretty. Royals midfielder Kyle McKay took a shot from just outside the arc. The ball hit someone in front of McKay and went straight up in the air like a popup in baseball. The Spartan keeper had come off his line, and the ball came down behind him, spun back up, hit the underside of the crossbar and fell into the net. This knotted the score at 1-1.Georgetown increased the attack and scored in the 65th minute, but the play was ruled offside. St. Mary’s was unable to take advantage of the referee’s call, and two minutes later, in the 67th minute, Georgetown took the lead for good. Senior midfielder Jim Savelyev split two defenders on the dribble and blew the ball past the Spartan keeper high and left to make the score Georgetown 2, St. Mary’s 1. St Mary’s never let down, and with five minutes left, it had a direct kick 20 yards out from the goal. The shot eluded the keeper and was headed for the corner of the net when a Royal defender cleared the ball off the line. The remainder of the game was played at midfield.Georgetown advances to the D3 North final this weekend, playing the winner of the Hamilton-Wenham/Tyngsboro game.
