SWAMPSCOTT ? The North Shore Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off its 61st consecutive season this Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Swampscott High School auditorium, 200 Essex St.Music Director Robert Lehmann will conduct Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in the season opener, which also marks the beginning of Lehmann’s 10th season as director of the NSPO. Lehmann, who is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of String Studies and Orchestral Activities at the University of Southern Maine School of Music, succeeded Max Hobart as the Orchestra’s third Music Director. During his tenure, the NSPO has maintained its high standard of quality in performing some of the most popular and demanding selections of the classical repertoire. Lehmann also conducts the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra and is music director of the highly acclaimed Portland Chamber Orchestra. Earlier this year, he was invited to become the conductor of the White Mountain Bach Festival in New Hampshire.The NSPO started in 1948 and was known as the Lynn Symphony Orchestra at that time. Its objective was to bring high-quality live classical music performances to the North Shore, which has it has done. Since its inception, the orchestra has regularly attracted patrons of the arts and served as a showcase for young soloists and aspiring musicians. NSPO President Robert Marra Jr. said the NSPO has reached out to attract young listeners and those previously unexposed to live classical music.?The Orchestra’s long-standing policy of free admission for children has made their concerts a delightful choice for families,” he said. “The Orchestra has been a major part of the cultural landscape on the North Shore for now over 60 years,” he said. “We have a solid following of North Shore residents and we are constantly looking for ways to expand our reach to the North Shore community.”This not the first appearance at Swampscott High School for the NSPO. It concluded its 60th season in April at Swampscott High School when it performed the first non-school sponsored event in the auditorium. That performance featured the Swampscott High School chorus and the Paul Madore Chorale in a stirring performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.Tickets, which are available at the door, are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors.
