Tournament games are not for the faint of heart, just ask Marblehead coach Sam Yawson, who’s team pulled out a 2-1 win over Arlington Catholic Friday in Division 2 North first round play at Arlington. The Magicians’ Elizabeth Miller scored five minutes into the game (Kathryn DiGiam marino assist) and the 1-0 lead held up until Arlington Catholic scored off a rebound with 15 minutes left to tie the game.”The second half, we sat on that one-goal,” Yawson said, adding that his team put pressure on Arlington Catholic down the stretch, but nothing found its way into the net.Marblehead’s Mary Keroack made sure “sudden death” was indeed sudden when she scored the game-winner, unassisted, 11/2 minutes into overtime.”I was very impressed with the way my defense played,” Yawson said, crediting Sarah Noyes, Gabby Carrick and Sarah Forward with keeping Arlington Catholic from doing much damage. The Magicians (11-6-2) are waiting on the outcome of the Concord-Carlisle vs. Reading game being played today. If Concord-Carlisle wins, Marblehead would get a home game. If Reading wins, the game will be in Reading, most likely on Tuesday.”It (the win) gave the kids a lot of confidence,” Yawson said. “I’m happy with the way they played.”Last year, the Magicians missed qualifying for the tournament by one point.Winthrop 2, Notre Dame 0In Division 3 North first-round play at Winthrop, the Vikings (7-8-4) scored both their goals in the first half, with Nicole Black accounting for the first one (Alex Covelle assist) and Vanessa Carruccio adding an insurance tally (unassisted) with 16 minutes left in the half.
