Danvers’ boys soccer team put together a sensational comeback to win their Division 2 preliminary round match up against Melrose 3-2 in the sudden-death round of penalty shots.”It was a great accomplishment after playing from behind for the majority of the game,” Falcons coach Antonio Lage said.Melrose controlled the play for the entire first half and jumped to a 2-0 lead. However, Chris Ciampa made sure that Danvers would not go into half time scoreless. Buddy Pasquariello fed him a beautiful pass and he delivered a clutch goal right before the half time whistle.”I really think that we were fortunate to go into half time only down by one,” Lage said. “Melrose carried the momentum for the majority of the time.”After a player from Melrose was shown the door with a red card, the Falcons started to take some of the momentum, and finally managed to tie the game up with only 38 second remaining in the game. Ciampa picked up his second goal of the game to put the game into overtime.After neither team could put the ball in the net in overtime, the game went to a shoot out. Both teams went four-for-five in the shoot out forcing a sudden death situation. Michael DeCoulous scored the goal that would send everyone home.Danvers will travel to Chelsea on Sunday.St. John’s 3 Salem 1In Division 1 North preliminary round play, the Eagles (8-5-6) lived to play another day. After a scoreless first half, St. John’s went to town, with goals by Sean Callahan, Tristan Hackett and Kelley Johnson. Johnson’s goal came with less than two minutes remaining and the Eagles hanging on to a 2-1 lead.Brad Duhaime scored for the Witches, who threatened down the stretch, hitting the post twice and the crossbar once in the final 10 minutes.”We got outhustled at the beginning of the game,” Salem coach Mike D’Agostino said. “They were winning most of the 50-50 balls.”Things won’t get any easier for the Eagles, who will play Haverhill Sunday (3) at Haverhill in a first-round game. The two teams met during the regular season and Haverhill won, 3-0.
