BEVERLY – So maybe, with a huge win over a top conference foe that took place on the road, the Marblehead football team will finally gain some respect in the eyes of Northeastern Conference fans. The Magicians blew out to a 21-0 lead with not even half the opening quarter played, and hung on to oust Beverly, 33-30, at Hurd Stadium Saturday afternoon. Not only does the win give Marblehead its second straight victory, it snaps an 11-game losing streak against the Panthers and moves the squad to the top of the NEC Small with a 2-0 mark. And one other small point that shouldn’t be missed: the team is just one triumph away from notching its first winning season since 1992, improving to 5-3 with three games remaining.”This is one of the best games that I’ve ever been a part of,” said a jubilant Doug Chernovetz, coach of the Magicians, who had been an assistant for two seasons at Beverly. “No one’s been picking us to win, and the kids have the predictions (of the sportswriters) hanging up (in the locker room). The seniors have been with me for four years, and they’re tired of hearing that we’re no good. The kids deserve respect.”Beverly went three-and-out on its first possession, and a nifty 27-yard punt return by Taariq Allen gave Marblehead good starting space from the Panthers’ 40. Quarterback Hayes Richardson didn’t waste any time, going to receiver Connor Carey who camped underneath the pass at the five and backed into the end zone for the game’s first points. The Panthers (6-2) went to the air on first down as well, yet quarterback Mark Hannable fired the first of his four interceptions, being picked off by Allen, to give the Magicians the ball at Beverly’s 17. Running back Nick Haller (11-26) gave the team a first down at the four, gaining five yards on third-and-2. Richardson called his own number two plays later, and the lead was 14-0 less than five minutes in.Halfback Rashad Sims gave Beverly breathing room with a nine-yard carry on first down to the Panther 33 when the team regained possession, but Hannable saw his next pass fall into the hands of defensive end Sam Perlow, who returned it all the way for the score and a 21-0 advantage just 5:33 into the contest.Marblehead’s defense rose to the occasion again near the end of the quarter. With the ball at the Marblehead 20, Richardson’s pass was intercepted by linebacker Joe SantaMaria and athe Panthers took over at the Magicians’ 29. Beverly had just gotten a first down by way of penalty to the 19, and after a failed run by Sims, Hannable was dropped for a loss by defensive lineman Stephon Clarke. Beverly was kept off the board after a pair of incompletions. Both squads traded possessions early in the second quarter, before the Panthers cut into the deficit. A solid kickoff return gave Beverly the ball at Marblehead’s 32. Hannable picked up five yards on the keeper, then Sims broke through the Magicians line for 27 yards and the first Beverly points of the day.Marblehead cushioned its lead on the last play of the half. Taking over at his 45 after a Beverly drive stalled, Richardson (9-17-1-217) hit Allen with a 15-yard completion on second down to spot the ball at the Panther 40. Moments later, Richardson teamed with receiver Dan Comeau (3-119) to the 24. After a third-down incompletion, kicker Ian McKinley booted a 41-yard field goal as time expired for a 24-7 Marblehead halftime edge.”I told Ian that if we were close enough (to the end zone), we’d have him attempt one,” said Chernovetz of the choice to go for the three. “It gave us good momentum going into the half.”After a scoreless third, McKinley added his second field goal, a 29-yarder, on the first play of the final quarter for a 27-7 advantage. That’s when all the real fun began. Beverly took over at its 37, and after a Hannable incompletion, Sims raced through the Marblehead defense and into daylight for a 63-yard score to bring the Panthers to within 27-14.Marblehead regained possession on the kickoff, taking over at
