REVERE ? With three minutes left in its game against Salem, it looked as though Revere was doomed to suffer another heartbreaking loss.Revere jumped out to a 13-0 lead, but Salem had closed the gap with a late score, and the Patriots were pinned at their own 20.But Paul DiPlatzi took the first-down pitch, broke for the right sideline, eluded a few tackles and found daylight on a run deep into Salem territory. Fifty-eight yards later, the game was firmly in the hands of the Patriots. The run helped ice a 13-6 Revere victory at Harry Della Russo Stadium Friday night. Revere improved to 2-4, while Salem fell to 3-3.Revere coach Lou Cicatelli said the call came after Salem had shut down the Patriots’ jet sweep earlier in the contest.”We thought we would change it up with some toss plays,” Cicatelli said. “Salem made some adjustments, but Paul broke loose.”DiPlatzi (15 carries, 124 yards) and Matt Gasparini (28-103) led a Revere rushing game that pounded Salem all game long, racking up 264 yards. After the DiPlatzi rush, Salem had one final chance to tie the game with two minutes remaining. Gasparini fumbled a carry inside the Salem 5-yard line that was recovered by Salem’s Davis Kendrick, but a Witches rush followed by three incomplete passes sealed the victory for Revere.Revere dominated the competition in the first half, holding the ball for nearly 75 percent of the time and running 36 plays to Salem’s 13.The Patriots took the opening drive from their own 37-yard line all the way to the Salem 9 in nine plays, but on the tenth play of the series the Patriots fumbled the exchange on the snap, which Salem recovered at its own 11.After a Salem three-and-out, the Patriots made sure their next drive counted. This time, a 12-play, 59-yard drive kept the ball in Revere’s possession for six minutes, culminating in a one-yard dive into the end zone by Gasparini for a 7-0 lead.Revere had one final drive stall at the Salem 24 on a turnover on downs.”Offensively, our only concern was that we moved up and down and only had 13 points,” Cicatelli said. “We got into the red zone four times and only scored twice.”The Patriots tacked on another score after halftime, set up by a 30-yard strike from quarterback Mike Duffy to Paul Cinelli to the Salem 10. Three plays later, DiPlatzi’s 3-yard rush made it 13-0.Salem missed out on two scoring chances on back-to-back possessions late in the game. Melikke Van Alstyne (10-33) and Eugene Dela Cruz (9-34) helped the Witches march up the field, but two fumbles just outside the Revere red zone ended each drive prematurely.”We’ve got to get better,” Salem coach Scott Connolly said. “We made too many mistakes.”Salem got on the board with three minutes left when quarterback T.J. Larivee connected with Van Alstyne on a 50-yard touchdown pass to make it 13-6.Cicatelli said his team’s strategy entering the game was to limit Van Alstyne offensively.”It’s no secret we were fearful of Van Alstyne,” he said. “If we stopped him, I thought there was a pretty good chance we’d win. I thought we corralled him pretty well.”After holding the lead in each of its games except one, Cicatelli said he was happy to see his team finally seal the deal in a victory.”Every game, we’ve been there, but we couldn’t find a way to close them out,” Cicatelli said. “We did that tonight, and I couldn’t ask for more.”
