Kevin McCarthy has had a season to remember for the St. Mary’s High golf team. The Spartans went undefeated in the Catholic Central League with McCarthy leading the way. He’s been one of the Spartans’ top dogs all season, and on Thursday, he established himself as the cream of the crop in the league by winning the CCL Individual Championship at Gannon Golf Course. The CCL coaches also voted him league Most Valuable Player for his performance during the regular season.”He’s a junior. This is quite an accomplishment,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “He had a great day.”Because they finished first in the league, the Spartans had five players competing. McCarthy topped the field with a 76, but teammates Matt O’Hare (77) and Jesse Powers (78) were nipping at his heels. Dan Lacroix took sixth with an 81 and George Carey finished 14th with an 85.The day didn’t start off all that well for McCarthy.”I had a triple bogey on the second hole,” he said. “That was pretty demoralizing, but I kept my composure and shot three-over the rest of the round. I birdied the 18th hole to win by a stroke.”The strong showing in the individual tournament was just one more feather in the Spartans’ cap. They went 10-0 in the league and 13-3 overall. Two of their three losses came against St. John’s Prep, the defending Division 1 North champion. The other was against BC High, which finished second in the Catholic Conference behind The Prep. All three losses were by five strokes or less.”Those both (the Prep matches) could have gone either way,” McCarthy said. “A couple of strokes here or there and we could have gone undefeated.”The Spartans will play in the Division 3 North qualifier Monday at Hillview Country Club in North Reading. The top three teams plus the top individual players will advance to the Division 3 state tournament at Shaker Hills Golf Club in Harvard on Monday, Oct. 27.
